Which is better for VRAY?

32-Core Threadripper 3970X or 32-Core 2x Xeon 6226R?

The Intel Xeon Gold Series seems to be more expensive, but that doesn’t make it better.

The 3970X.

Bobby get 3990x you won’t regret it, just be sure you get proper cooling for it.

Good to know, thanks!

I am thinking about 3990x too. But what is proper cooling according to you? I have a friend that have standard air fan for TR4 on 3990X. Another with water cooling, not sure if its NZXT or what, but all is pretty similar. And finaly another with custom loop. Every gear works, of course temperature is best on custom loop. But what do you think what is good cooling for it? Thank you.

I just read Intel’s new 10th gen i9 (correction) is supposed to beat Ryzen. Is this true?

Beat Ryzen in what? And which Ryzen CPU exactly (there are like 20 different models)? 10th gen i7 is the 10700k which is an 8-core CPU. It isn’t even remotely as fast as a Threadripper in rendering. It is at best as fast as the $300 8-core Ryzen 3700x in rendering.

But with the new 10th Gen CPUs, Intel has once again made a firm claim the top performance spot with the Intel Core i9 10900K coming in at about 8% faster than the similarly priced AMD Ryzen 9 3900X, or 6% faster than the more expensive AMD Ryzen 9 3950X.

Photoshop CPU performance: Intel Core 10th Gen vs AMD Ryzen 3rd Gen | Puget Systems.

That’s mostly just for single core operations for photoshop. See this for vray…V-Ray CPU Rendering Performance: Intel Core 10th Gen vs AMD Ryzen 3rd Gen | Puget Systems

When you consider that the 10980xe is a ~$1000 chip (you can find some good deals though) and the 3950x is $725 and they get roughly the same scores it seems an easy choice. However both the 10980 and the 3950 aren’t really new, they both are about a year old. I don’t think intel has anything that can even compare to the 3990x at a price that is anywhere close.

I’m not sure where you’re getting these numbers, but Ryzen 3900x is a tiny bit faster than 10900k in Vray while Ryzen 3950x is quite a bit faster at +34%. Can I ask why you are looking at 8-12 core CPUs? Do you need a budget rendering machine?

By the way, AMD are literally releasing tomorrow the new Ryzen CPUs based on the Zen 3 technology which blows away anything Intel has at the moment core for core. I suggest you watch the reviews tomorrow (14:00 GMT if I remember correctly) before making any decisions.

  • AMD Ryzen™ 9 3950X (16-Core, 64MB L3 Cache, Max Boost Clock of 4.7GHz)
  • Windows 10 Pro, 64-bit, English
  • NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3090 24GB GDDR6X
  • 128GB Dual Channel HyperX™ FURY DDR4 XMP at 3200MHz
  • 2TB M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD (Boot) + 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s (Storage)
  • Lunar Light chassis with High-Performance CPU Liquid Cooling and 1000W Power Supply

that case is just weird

Can you even buy a 30x series nvidia anywhere on earth rn anyway?

If I look at chaosgroup benchmark scores, your current setup beats your proposed setup by quite a large margin. Did you mean to write 3960x or 3970x or 3990x?
I would ask the same question Alex_M is asking above…

He recommended the 3950, which this is. Anything more is out of the ballpark in price. This one is $6000 and when I spec the same on BOXX, it is twice that.

Hey @glorybound

Unless you get a good deal on these Xeons, don’t bother honestly
Threadripper is better in every way

-Don’t use 120 MM AIO with this CPU, you need 280 or 360
There is Corsair H150I and NZXT kraken X73

-Use this case, Lian Li 011 Dynamic XL or Lian Li 011 Air
There is also Be Quiet Dark Base Pro 900,

You will need to buy 9 fans for the first 2 cases, they come with no fans..

-For Memory look for 3200 MHz @ CL14 .. I use Gskill TridentZ , There is also 3600 MHz at CL16 if you cannot find CL14
128 GB of memory are fine btw, unlike the case with the older 2990wx

-Motherboard, I don’t get any ASrock boards around here.. I will recommend what I use for my builds
Zenith Extreme TRX40 or MSI Creator TRX40 or Gigabyte TRX40 Aorus Extreme .. it is worth to invest in these honestly

-And if you can get your hand on a cheap Titan RTX now for under 2k Euros, it would be great. So that you can use 2 with NVlink
Otherwise get a 3090 (if you can find it)

This is a recent build with the 3990x, and more or less the same memory/board/cooling

3090’s on Amazon, for $3500!

The only legit way of getting one, is through boutique builders like Maingear. I mean if you are not building the machine on your own, check them out Bobby
They are not as expensive as Boxx or Dell, and their cases/cooling is pretty good!
