Exposure matchup between 3dsmax and Vantage

Hi there,
I’m testing out the new 3dsmax viewport to Vantage link, but I experience the same exposure issue when doing a live link from 3dsmax:

Exposure settings in 3dsmax environment is the following:

This enables me to render perspective views at the correct exposure when I’m not in a camera view.
So when I link the 3dsmax viewport to Vantage it initially displays correct - with auto exposure turned on:

Problem is as soon as I move in the 3dsmax perspective viewport, the exposure is over blown - Auto exposure turns off by itself.
Also, my next step was to change the exposure mode to “Value” and add the corresponding number, but the same thing happens when I move in the perspective viewport - values reset to exposure mode “None” and no auto exposure…

When I look through my camera in 3dsmax and move/rotate through the camera view, the exposure remains correct.

Edit: If I bring down the exposure at the top of the Vantage window to around -5, the display matches up with the 3dsmax perspective viewport.

Then I’m able to move and rotate in the max viewport and the vantage viewport exposure stays consistent with the max viewport.

Looking through a camera though results in a too dark view, so then I have to disable the -5 exposure value.

What am I doing wrong - I can’t seem to get a proper tutorial on this anywhere?

Also, what is best to use in the 3dsmax environment setting:
Physical camera exposure control or Vray exposure control - and why?

Please advise,

Thanks!

Hi philip_nel,

We don’t have support for the exposure control from the Environment settings. We have it logged in our system under LAV-378. For the auto-exposure resetting in Vantage is happening since 3.2.0 when we enabled the Auto exposure setting to sync from host DCC during Live Link. We are currently implementing a way to keep Vantage local changes during live link and it will be part of the next release. In the mean time as a sort of a workaround enable the auto exposure option(Render setup>Settings>Camera>Auto exposure) in Max.

Best regards,

Alexander

Thanks for clarifying Alexander!
Yes, would be great if Vantage is even more integrated with 3dsmax and vray - taken in to account environment settings like exposure, but also separate GI/Reflection/Refraction values.

I often detach the 3dsmax background from the GI/Reflection/Refraction slots to avoid over exposed areas in the sky.

And more texture compatibility - for one, VrayDistanceTex - I’m sure there’s others too.

Thanks and looking forward to the new Vantage updates!
