grazing sheeps - grass mats for vray

some asked me for the grassmat i used for my last project. mostly the material is from GONCALOP and DANIELE (hope this is right). i just tweaked some mappings and settings. i created a matlib with 3 different grass-styles. also a testscene to see the settings. the scene didn´t turn out like i wanted it, but i´m sure you guys out there know what i mean and work it out a better way. it was just a quick thing.

the zip-file is a little large (8.5 mb). mostly because of the mappings. i hope my provider won´t kill me. we will see.. 8)

Grass matlib and scene (max 5.1)

have fun…

…Nice one…

Natty

cheers

what are the render times like?

if you need me to, i can mirror it for you.

p.s. thanks!

thanks, we will se what se provider will say  hope i don´t hear from him…

as i said, the testscene isn´t that good. thought it would be funny using sheeps, but the mesh isn´t that good for it. also i think the grass looks too high. the matlib ist allright i think. i´m sure you can do better stuff with it than this :-))

oh, rendertimes…hmmm…i think okay. when it´s too high, change the details of the displacement back to 8 f.e. the scene is just a hint, no rendertest  it´s not optimized for fast rendering

Hey thanks a lot man!! Definitely gonna use these for the coming projects at work. My boss is going to be so amazed

Sebastiaan.

just did a quick test…droped some of the GI settings down and removed the right one, but a 1000x750 render took 4 mins (without antialiasing) on a 2.2 p4m…so not too bad…

its certainly a starting point, the trick will be to see how much work it needs for a high res larger scene

cheers

I did a test too. Opened the scene and pressed render.
Rendertime: 24 minutes :? (pentium4 2,5Ghz)
But I guess if you tweak the settings you can speed up the render times…

metroberlin
is that normal practise to put the Displacement modifier after the UVWmap modifier…

i ask cos im new to vray displacement…

i think it´s equal…before or after…

i do find you get more control over the mapping of the displacement map, if its before ?

i see, you all will get deeper into that stuff as i did

Well I’m sure it’ll render quicker than Maya fur, and Paint Effects for that matter.

i dropped hsph subdivs to 15 and interp to 15, gi was on -3,-3 AA was off

as i said…this scene is NOT OPTIMIZEDD for rendertests. dicplacement can be rendered much faster than in this scene. it was just so show the materials, nothing more

I did a test also but with a different scene…
for close ups is very hard to give the grass a high quality result
but if you look from a far distance point the results are very convincing.

this is the result:

rendertime: 1min. 35 sec. (close-up).

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

rendertime: 1min. 58 sec. (Incremental add to current map).

C&C are welcome!

awesome, thanks metroberlin for sharing the knowledge

What are the spec of the machine used for those renders? want to post the scene files?

hmmm something dont seem right here. i logged onto my machine at home via VNC, and rendered the grass scene, everything was at the settings stored in the file, i didnt change a thing.
The render time was 51mins!!! MY comp is a AMD 2700 1GBram win2k.
Doesnt it seem a little odd that it took so long on my machine?!?!?

yes considering i have a 1.9ghz p4 and it only took mine 14mins
