HDR Images not working as light textures after update to V7.40.00

After I updated to the version v7.40.00 HDR images are showing as black in light textures.
Cinema 4D version 2026.1.4

Hi @kristian_nurmi , can you give some details on your problems. Specifically:

  1. Where are you loading the HDRs from.
  2. When you say that “images are showing as black in light textures” - do you mean just the preview or the render output?
  3. Can you send a simple example scene reproducing the issue.

Edit: Can you also check this post, in particular whether you have invalid files copied in the tex directory of your project.

  1. I’m adding the image files from a dropbox folder, same that I have used for years
    2. I mean when I add a hdr texture to any light, the light stops emitting light, it renders black. The texture preview shows the texture as it should. The same goes for existing scenes that have worked before the update and have the HDR already loaded. And when I remove the texture the light emits light.
    3. It doesn’t matter if a create a new scene or and old scene the result is the same. A sample file attached.

    light-texture-example.zip (46.1 KB)

The texture files are in order, they show the size of 25MB

It actually seems like that it’s not just the lights. If I load any texture to any material it renders just grey. Even in a new scene

The is actually an error during installation, maybe related to this problem, as the problem is with textures.dll?
“Encountered errors during installation:
FAILED to back up C:\Program Files\Maxon Cinema 4D 2026\plugins\V-Ray\res\libs\win64\plugins\vray_textures.dll: File does not exist
FAILED to Create C:\Program Files\Maxon Cinema 4D 2026\plugins\V-Ray\res\libs\win64\plugins\vray_textures.dll”

The installation problem that you mention may be the cause and would explain any texture not working. Can you check the console log - there should be errors or warnings relating this problem. You can open it with [Extensions] → [Console] menu (or [Shift+F10]).

About the installation problem in particular - can you try to manually delete the dll file and then install again? If there is an error and you can not delete it, you may need to restart your machine and try right after the restart.

The probelm seemed to be that Vray was not able to install the vray_textures.dll, so it was missing. Reinstalling the 7.40.00 didn’t work, just got the same error as before, so I reverted to vray 7.20.00 . Now everything works like it used to and there is vray_textures.dll in the folder. Maybe I will wait for the next update before I try to upgrade again.

Found the reason. F-Secure had flagged the vray_textures.dll in the 7.40.00 as a trojan and quarantined it.
