How can I make a simple chrome or satin chrome

Hi,

I just started using Vray advanced a while ago and I’m doing my first job with it now. I need to figure out how to make a nice metal on my chairs, as in this picture. Also, included a portion of my current rendered scene.

Can somebody please share w/ me? Thank you!

Use a Vray Mtl with some reflection, and a glossy reflect. of 0.8 more or less. Don’t forget to turn on interpolation, so it won’t last a lot to render.

Regards,
Joao.

ok, i’m absolutely frustrated. I can’t even do this! All I get is a crappy flat color, like in my last picture.

You don’t have the reflections turned off globaly do you?

Try the materials here by Gonçalo http://www.evermotion.org/gifts.htm they should give you a good start.

Try this:

Diffuse color: Black
Reflection: 160
Glossines : .8
Glossi Subdivisions: 3 (if using adaptative antialiasing) and without interpolation.

IOR: 2.5

Anisotropic -0.5

It should work

thanks, I will give it a shot. i can’t wait to get a thorough manual on Vray! I feel like I have this amazing 800 dollar tool and I don’t know how to use it right.

Well, I’m making headway. I’ve got decent materials now, but the shiny parts are making render times super high. Just this part took 15 min. to render. I actually am using another metal material I found here somewhere. Its great for looks, but I need to make it faster.

When you mean 160, do you mean 160,160,160 in RGB???

I mean a 160 grey or RGB 160; 160; 160

RE

Goncalo…when you say IOR 2.5 you mean under Refraction? Refraction should be black?

The IOR also affects relections, not only used for refractions
Here you can find some values http://www.vray.info/entry.asp?entryID=77

re

Try this for grins

diffuse: black
reflect: falloff=> top swatch:white bottom swatch: 168,168,168
      leave everything else default.
no glossy reflections.

This config almost looks platinum..bling bling

It is true but you may notice that only for non metallic materials, so it is usefull when you use such mats as glass, plastic, or other that have in common they are FRESNEL reflexion material types…So only works with fresnel checked on…

Actually metals have an ior too

meaby u have uncheked reflect in global swiches?

Try this for grins

diffuse: black
reflect: falloff=> top swatch:white bottom swatch: 168,168,168
leave everything else default.
no glossy reflections.

Holy moly! I tried it and it looks awesome! So, what would I do with that to make it look softer, say with a satin or brushed finish?

(i don’t think i have the quote thing figured out)
