I see from the support section that the latest official build is 1.5SP1, however there are demo versions of newer builds. Also Vlado often mentions that they working on a specific feature and that it will be in the next build or that feature so and so was included in such and such a build.
Is there some kind of secret support section I dont know about or does Vlado just send some users a link to newer builds since they need a feature that is not in the official “latest” build of 1.5SP1?
How does all this work? If I’m starting a new project, what is the latest VRay version I can use for it? I mean if I request it, can I get a newer build than the official one? I’m a bit lost
Normally what happens is if you’ve got something horribly wrong with vray for what you’re doing at the time Vlado will give you a version with a fix but without comprehensive testing it’s impossible to say if that fix has a knock on effect or not - For this reason it’s generally a bad idea to stray away from the main release builds - These ones tend to have been hammered in testing so you can rely on them a lot. It’s normally a bad idea to continually use the latest untested build since if you return to an old project at some stage a newer build might give you different issues or render with slight colour and lighting differences, hence why the latest development build isn’t automatically released - it’d be far more problematic than it’s worth.
If you have a show-stopping problem that can not be worked around and you email me to vlado@chaosgroup.com, I could provide you with a fix (if it can be fixed, of course); however as others pointed out, internal builds are somewhat of a work in progress and are not fully tested.
Also, SP2 will be released soon (sometime around the release of 3ds Max 2009).
Hmm SP2 sounds good. I think I understand now. 1.5SP1 is the latest stable build and is the one I should be using. If only my dongle will arrive I can get away from RC5! (its been only 2 weeks so I’m geussing I’ll be waiting another 2 weeks - I hope not longer than that)
That’s it and thankfully rc5 is a really good build - there’s very few things it can’t do in any production situation. Coupled with having backup if there’s any serious issues it’s a greta situation to be in.
Where can I get version 1.49 R5??
Is there any link in the site for getting older versions?
I want this because I’m using 1.50SP1 and I get the feeling that theres some slowness in “processing vertices…” when using proxies and just want to test it.
Its about 30.500 proxies of 6 objects with about 20.000 triangles.
It hangs in there for a little over a minute and then begins updating instances.
I have works on scenes with more than 100.000 trees with 10 instances of about 100.000 triangles each and I don’t remenber that big pause before the “update instances”
Quoted for Agreement: RC5 is one of the best recent builds to produce with.
It may not have all the latest bells and whistles, and a few, minor bugs, but boy that works great.
