Linear Workflow with max and Vray

I’m sure most of you guys are experts on linear workflow and gamma 2.2 but for the newcomers, I wrote a blog entry today about it. If your a little lost on the subject check it out.

Great! It has everything in really simple and understandable form.
Could you also mention the adjustament needed to vrayMat raytrace threshold?
Default 0.01 isn’t enough anymore. Should be like 0.005 - 0.001.

could you explain what you mean about the vraymat raytrace threshold Lars?

I meant the cutoff value in vrayMat options which is 0.01 default.
When rendering using linear workflow, it has causing troubles/errors in many cases.
Reflections are being cutoff too early and wont be rendered as they should.
Lowering cutoff value to 0.005 or even lower should correct it.

Thanks for your effort, its really apreciated here.

Posted some of the general pitfalls that can happen with this workflow. Hoping it helps.

Hey Lars,
I got the impression that when turning on 2.2 gamma color mapping, but not affecting the render would compensate for the contrast change on all the controls in Vray?
Can anyone verify that?

Fred

I was reading this tread the other day and some others on the forum re: LWF. I ran some tests with the MAX gama set to 2.2 2.2 1.0 (output) and and the following Vray CM settings:

Linear 1.0, 1.0 2.2 with DAC checked - looked fine in FB but dark in Photoshop. Save file as a .tif
Linear 1.0, 1.0, 2.2 with DAC unchecked - Colors washed out in FB but image was correct in PS
Linear 1.0, 1.0, 1.0 with DAC unchecked - Looked fine in FB but dark in PS

Then I changed my MAX settings to 2.2, 2.2, 2.2 (output)

Set my Vray CM to Exponential 1.0, 1.0, 1.0 looked good in FB and looked good in PS

So I’m confused about your settings. Do I need to be saving my image to EXR to get your settings to work?

Vince

No, but you need to specify the output gamma to be 2.2 in the save file settings´gamma options.
