milky / murtky water

hy guys!

im having some troubles making milky water like in this example foto

my way to get a similar effect is the vrayfastsss2 material with raytraced single scatter mode
to tint the water i use the sss-color slot
this works well when the color is dark, but if i change it to the light gray-green water i need even the very shallow water gets a very strong tint.
the scatter color in these previews is white
enlarging the scatter radius makes the water more transparent, but the shallows stay tinted.

any idea to get this to look right?
is the fastsss2 the right material for this?

thanks

rene

you need to use vray material with refraction and fog color (the internal color of the water) will give you the color you want.

Translucency in the VRayMtl material might also work well.

I like your avatar. I have a 2011 Mini Cooper, and I love it!

When I make water I use vray fog. Very easy to adjust the fog color and brightness. Then use either a separate gizmo for the fog, or use your water object as your gizmo.
It might be good to tag the water object as “ignore for GI” in the vray properties box. That is if you get undesired shadows cast from your water onto your underlying objects. It’s not always necessary though.

Including a render with my standard green water. You also get the correct shadows cast in the water from objects when using env fog. Did a quick test with a whiteish water and some gravel. Including the fog settings for that.

Thats what I do to, feels like it’s easier to control for me - makes it much easier to separate the elements to re-balance it in post too.

thanks for the replies!

nice idea with the env-fog - i will try that

@glorybound: yeah i had a cooper too and loved it, but sold it a few month ago - needed a bigger car
