Missing geometry II

I first posted this in the Public thread but I realize it would be better in the General thread.
I’m still having problems. I posted the file to Chaos Group last week but I was busy and not paying attention and now I see that it was a 50 mg file so it might not have gotten through.
This is a section of the original file with textures and everything else removed.
When I render this in 2.0 half the items are missing.
I suspect the problem may have to do with bringing some elements in from Rhino but I’ve not been able to systematically determine exactly when the problem occurs.
Hopefully someone out there can render the file (it’s small - shouldn’t take more than a minute or two) and see if I’m misunderstanding something obvious and basic.

Thanks in advance.

I only experience this when the names of the materials contain or end with a special character (something else than a number or a letter)

I had a look at this and also can’t figure it out - interesting.
I also tried opening my own template and imported your file - which then rendered correctly!
I also tried creating a new element pulled from the floor - that also did not render. Its a mistery!

Sorry can’t help.

Hello Arial-

V-Ray is looking for a material named glass_basic which it can’t find. If I create new material named glass_basic then everything renders properly. This bug has been reported already. Do you recall having that material in your model?

Thanks for the reply Corey. The answer is ‘I don’t know’. Following the advice of someone over on the Sketchucation / V-Ray forum I copied all my geometry into a new SketchUp scene and the problem disappeared. I had already changed all my glass to another vismat called ‘architectural glass’ so if I had glass-basic in my scene it wouldn’t have copied over because there was no longer a material with that name.

A question: glass_basic is a glass material on the ChaosGroup download site. Are you suggesting we avoid that material or are you saying that if we’ve used that material we need to keep it in the material list even if we are no longer using it because V-Ray is going to keep looking for it?

Arail,

Its less about what materials you use, and more about getting V-Ray to find what its looking for. I’ve had this problem on multiple models, and this particular issue happens with materials that are deleted or imported, and occur over time. Were working toward solving this issue as we speak. But essentially yes, to work around the lost material issue at the moment you’ll need to keep that material in your scene for it to render properly.

While copying your model into a new scene is one workaround, it may not be suitable for larger models with high poly counts which is why I suggest adding the material to the scene.

Keep us informed on how the model progress and if you run into any more issues.

Best,

Ted V.

Also note that it’s really not that hard to trouble-shoot if you know where to look. Once you see the material name in the error log, then you know where to look - and either get rid of the material reference in the model, or like it has been explained here and in the other thread, just add the material back in SU.
I would be happy to see vfsu fail a bit more gracefully on material errors, rather than not rendering at all. Hopefully that’s where it’s headed.

Worth noting that this wouldn’t (I think) be relevant here as there was no error log. The scene rendered but it was missing several elements. I notice that in a new version of the scene rendered yesterday (without problems) glass_basic is on the material list but I’m pretty sure I didn’t include it as there is only one glass material in the scene now and that’s not it. Is glass_basic a virus chasing us around model to model?

So we’ve been testing this today, and it is really something frustrating. We did however track it down to Sketchup developing a strange material that doesn’t exist, literally, no materials anywhere in the scene but showing a plane with materials. We’ve notified Trimble about this bug oddity and hopefully it will get resolved in the future, between our team and their team now knowing about it now, should be fixable!

There are some strange things that can happen with SketchUp materials, but this one in particular is really odd. The mystery material can actually be a completely valid material, applied to a face, which just does not exist in the Sketchup.active_model.materials list at all… If anyone can track down a way to create a material like this, please let me know, and I will pass the information along with the existing bug report I filed today with Trimble. I have no idea how to reproduce the issue, but we have just introduced a change in our code to help deal with situations like this. Ted and Fernando will be testing this change and if it proves effective, it will be added to the next VfS patch.
