Motion blur artifacts

Hello, Vantage developers and fellow users. I hope you’re all doing well.

Before I get to my question, I want to express my gratitude.
Vantage is a program that has positively and significantly changed my workflow,
and I am truly thankful to all of you. I’m sincerely glad you’re here.

Lately, I’ve been concerned about a problem with ‘motion blur’ while working.
Since I’ve only been using Vantage for about three months,
I’m not sure if this is an issue I’m causing out of ignorance or if my usage is incorrect, so I decided to post here.

I believe this wasn’t a problem with other programs I used (like CPU rendering with V-Ray or Corona),
but when I apply motion blur in Vantage, a line-like noise or artifact appears.

I’m curious if this is an issue that can be resolved, or if it’s currently unavoidable.

Whatever the answer, my gratitude for Vantage will not change.
It’s a truly great program that has made a big difference in my life.

Here are my desktop specs:

i9-14900K
GeForce RTX 4080

3Ds Max 2024
V-Ray 6, update 2.1
Vantage 2.8.1

I did a total of 24 tests, but since I can only upload 5 images here, I’m just uploading five for now.

The options I tested were Lights tree samples, Direct light reservoir (re)sampling, and the Render Defaults options in Preferences,
so I think the images I’ve uploaded should be enough to distinguish between them.

If you need results from other options for your answer, just let me know.

The attached images are the results I rendered while changing various options. I hope they are helpful for your response.

Hi, this is a known issue, but there is no simple solution. We use a post-processing pass for motion blur (as indicated in the Camera settings, but the text in the render dialog does not mention this). This is because the render engine uses DirectX Raytracing and it does not support hardware accelerated motion blur. Our motion blur pass is designed as a real-time effect (like in games), but users demanded it for their offline renders so we enabled it for offline at some point, making a compromise.

Are the artifacts noticeable when you play the animation at full speed? It should be much better than looking at a static frame.

Thanks so much for the kind and detailed explanation. It seems like, for now, I won’t be able to achieve the motion blur effect I want, right?

If that’s the case, what would be the best way to get a good motion blur effect while using Vantage? I’m willing to try any advice you can offer.

Applying the Vantage motion blur to slow-moving objects doesn’t look awkward, but for extremely fast objects like an airplane, it creates those artifacts. I think I need a different method for fast movements. Could you recommend any alternative approaches?

In theory you could try using an external tool for creating post-processed motion blur based on the (screen space) Velocity render element. I can’t recommend a specific tool though, I am not familiar with them.
