Need your advice

Hello,

a few days ago I downloaded the 1.5 version. Now I am playing around with all those fancy new features

But while testing all the new stuff some questions appeared.

This is my testscene:

1.) I used the physical cam and vray sun/sky. The sun is very high above. But the sky is still very dark (while all other obejcts are bright enough). Did I miss something (maybe a seperate brightness multiplier for the sky)?

2.) VRay Fur (used for the gras) now seems to be controllable via maps. There is also a “Thickness map” slot included. Unfortunately it seems to be not possible to control the thickness of each hair/blade of gras. E.g. something like this → /\

best regards,
Mirko

Here are some further details:

is your sky set to manual?

No - it is not set to “manual”.

I didn’t modify the sky map at all.

ok as a test set your sky to manual and select the vraysun as the sun node and see if that fixes it

ok as a test set your sky to manual and select the vraysun as the sun node and see if that fixes it

That did not help. :frowning:

Any other ideas?

maybe your shutter is too fast and your diffuse colors are too bright for a slower speed

just my 2 cent

a.

i gess ur materials r too bright specially the floor…
set everything to a mid gray and re work ur camera from there!

Hi Mirko,

I had the same sort of problem. Here is a link to my thread.

VRayPhysicalCamera settings:
Try changing your shutter speed to 100.
Also leave your sun and sky setting at the defualt.

Hope this helps.

Well for the skycolor:

drag your environment map to a material editor slot.
Set to manual, then pick the skylight
set the intensity of the skymap higher to get to brighter.

I have the same problem sometimes, but not always. Haven’t figured out why. My solution is the same as pixelstudio. Try manual mode and turn up the sky brightness.

Are you using color mapping with affect background?

@Clifton: Yes, I use the Reinhard color mapping with “affect background” (as seen on screenshot above). If I deactivate “affect background” the sky is purely white.

But I think I have sorted it out. The Reinhard color mapping has a “Burn value”. This value in conjuction with the shutter speed of my physical cam seem to be the values to play with.
My theory for the moment:
- I have to reduce the Burn value to lower the overall contrast in the image
- then I have to decrease the shutter speed to let more light in
Result: the sky is brigther

I hope I am right (still rendering).

Mirko

u can also either try to turn on the srgb button in the vfb or set the reinhard gamma to 2.2

it also looks like your vignetting is darken the sky extremly. but could also be my monitor.

Thanks to all for all your help!!!

I had to decrease the “Burn value” to 0.2 and the “shutter speed” to 100

I think the result is quite ok now:

mirko, is you sun multiplier at 1?

@jacksc02: yes, it is. Should I change it? Do you think my scene looks to bright/dark?

no it looks fine, i still think the sky is a little dark compared to the ammount of environment light you have

Quoted for agreement. Try unchecking vignetting in the vray physical camera settings.

Yes, your’re right. The vignetting darkens the sky. But I really like this fx! I won’t miss it.
