no bitmap preview

i have a file that when i open it the bitmap previews does not show a preview unless i navigate to the bitmap once more and select it, is this some issue with the vray materials? will send a scene to support

Probably an asset resolving issue. Check the asset tracking dialog when you open the file and check where the bitmap is pointing.

yeah i wish it was so simple, all paths link to the correct folder currently, its abit strange

Does the same happen if you open the file on a different computer? If yes, maybe we should take a look at it.

Vlado

not sure, i should give it a try now and report back, i sent the file to support and they said no issue on their side

I had this issue a million times already, I don’t think it’s Vray related. The only thing that helps is delete the bitmap node and create a new one.

I had this, too. In some cases it helped to “Reload” or to “View” the image inside max.

yeah your right, its the only thing that works but its awful when its a big scene, the origin of the file is suspect to me though, i think issues were there when the file was originally created, i didn’t start it so i guess that’s where it is and am not sure what version etc was used but when i create my scenes from scratch all is ok, clean and perfect

no that didn’t help, tried that at the start

Have you tried to convert Bitmaps to V-Ray HDRIs and see if it is better or not?

no i haven’t, manually each bitmap you mean? i have always wondered what are the benefits of using the hdri loader instead of the regular bitmap loader for loading regular images

Right click > convert bitmaps to vray hdri does it for all the bitmaps. I thought vray HDRI has better filtering and I’ve read that it might be faster in loading too, but not quite sure. Since Vray HDRI supports real world scale display in viewports I never use a regular bitmap anymore.

interesting, i wonder if anyone has seen better render times or anything similar, that would be nice:)

another thing i ran across though few times which i never checked was when viewing very large maps with the hdri loader its very blurry compared to the standard bitmap loader which gives near correct results, any reason why?

You mean in the viewports? Or something else?

Best regards,
Vlado

yes in the viewport, i already increased the viewport bitmap preview res to 30k and for a test i have both the hdri and regular loader ported into the diffuse map slot to check it on the fly, is there an option in the hdri loader for better viewport preview? i would make a small video or so to show but that will have to be in the next half hour maybe

Here we go, hope this is good enough

Actually I might have been wrong: http://forums.chaosgroup.com/showthread.php?88735-Vray-HDRI-chokes-LC-Slows-down-render might be a bug too.

EDIT: I was too hasty. It renders just as fast it seems.

ahh, good you took the time to test it, for me now it seems the issue is with using large res images with the hdri loader, i posted a video below, it can’t display the images as is in the viewport, so i guess then other than using it for loading hdr.exr. etc images there is no real benefit to using it over the regular bitmap loader for regular bitmaps?

anything on this? stil not getting a good preview in the viewport using the hdri loader
