I directed the render to go to a folder that didn’t exist. My fault, but it rendered anyway, no warning, and no renders.

Yes, I see that we are printing a warning " Failed to write file" right after the render is executed.I assume you would prefer the file/path check to be performed when it is set in the field?
I don’t get any warning of any kind.
Will log this as an improvement so we can either show a warning or just create the folders specified to prevent the rendering without output.
