overheating problems

Hi there,

I have a supermicro x7dwa-n motherboard installed (as purchased) into a supermicro server case SC743. I have (since I bought it) been having overheating problems. The only way I could rectify it was to take the case side off.

I want to sort this problem out. I have re-seated the cpus using silver thermal grease. A blob of grease on the cpus after cleaning the cpu & heatsink. Then tighten up the heatsink onto the cpu using 4 screws in a diagonal fashion…i know its quite nerdy :slight_smile:

It is now better, but still getting too hot. Under full load and with case closed, the temp of the first core still manages to reach 82 degrees C. I was told it should be about 60 degs under full load.

Any ideas ?

What sort of case fans does it have? Generally they should push in on the side/front fans and out at the rear.

How do the core voltages look, are they all the same and in spec?

The voltages all look to be about 1.2v I think..I’ll double check that..

more importantly what kind of cpus do you have? what kind of heatsinks are on them? secondly do you have a good air flow through your system?
I got 2 fans in the front, 1 in the back and 1 on the top, my system is pretty cool, except the cpu. But the type of cpu that I got allows for it to be quite hot.
