problem with sea water material

Hi guys,

I have a problem replicating the nice effect of sea water in my first render. The first time I did a render with sea water material, i was quite impressed with the result (nice wavy reflections and stuff). Then I did other renders but could not get the same result. :frowning:

Would anyone know why?

Here’s the first render:

All the renders look like this one.

Thank you,

Re: problem with sea water material

It’s me again.

I forgot to mention that I could not render materials (e.g. sea water) when applied on the vray infinite plane. I did both, apply directly to the group as well as edit group and apply on both faces, but the render will have the flat colors of whatever the colors of the Styles (front and back) are.

Any clues?

Thank you very much!

Re: problem with sea water material

I am using the latest one (1.48.66). Maybe it’s a bug? ???

Re: problem with sea water material

One more thing…the Preview shows a black square on some of the materials. What does it mean? Missing link, images…? ???

Thanks!

Re: problem with sea water material

Is the water material in the first render applied to the V-Ray Infinite Plane?
It looks like you’ve used a noise displacement, but I was always under the impression that we couldn’t apply displacement to the infinite plane.

Could you post an image of material preview? I’ve never heard of black squares, but I sometimes get previews where the entire preview box is black.

(Great job with the water, btw. I thought you were going to say the first image was a photograph and the second was your attempt to duplicate it in V-Ray, lol!)

Re: problem with sea water material

I have had numerous problems with the black squares, it is missing materials. For some reason mine does the same thing, where vray resets the locations of the materials and can no longer find them until I re-path them. I also get it where vray will “reset” the material when I use bump and displacement sometimes it will go back to default. I have no idea why.

I have been using the newest version of vray and haven’t had any problems so far, although I just started rendering again for another project after about 4 months.

The water looks good!

Re: problem with sea water material

@Marcus:
I can’t remember for sure if I did apply the water material to the infinite vray plane or a very large plane. I did both I think. Either way, it was working only once. Somehow I could not replicate that nice water.

I don’t know about noise displacement. I did not change any settings. It was the material I got directly from the download section of ASGVIS website. It was in the folder “Liquid” or something. Speaking of that, what happened to that folder? It seems like it has been removed. :frowning: ???

About the black square, it is the Preview in the Material Editor (top left corner). Sorry about the confusion.

Thank you. Haha…LOL. Good one. It’s not April’s Fool yet. ;D

@Joe:
How do you re-path a material? Thanks!

I did some more renders tonight, but still could not get the same water effect than in the first image. Sometimes the vray buffer window is completely black and the progress window shows 0% Seems like vray wasn’t working at all. I had to restart Sketchup :frowning:

I will do some more renders tomorrow and try to figure out what the problem is.

Thanks and have a wonderful day (or night? :-)!

Re: problem with sea water material

Ken,
Sorry for confusion, re-pathing it is my term for re-inserting the bump or displacment maps, or re-linking the material. For some reason or another vray always seems to break these links randomly. I would like to figure out why, gets to be kind of a pain in the butt especially when you are under a deadline and you render what you think is a final image only to get a bunch of black and gray areas on your image.

Re: problem with sea water material

Thanks, Joe.

Re: problem with sea water material

Does anyone have good sea water materials to share?

Thank you,

Re: problem with sea water material

The liquid category on the Download area is working now

Re: problem with sea water material

Hi Fernando,

Thanks for putting back the liquid materials. They work on a geo plane but not on the Vray infinite plane.

When I applied the material onto my Vray infinite plane and do a render:
1- the frame buffer is black and the progress windows shows 0%.
2- Sketchup crashes.

Also, is it normal that the preview window of the material is black?

Thank you,

_KN

Re: problem with sea water material

The infinite plane is very difficult to mapping because do not have a real dimension or limit. If you want to mapping the infinite plane you have to change the UVW Type and use UVWGenPlanarWorld and reduce the repeat value.
