Recommend mobile GPU

Hi,

I’m considering:

* the Alienware 17,

7th. generatie Intel® Core™ i7 processor,

Windows 10 Pro

16 GB geheugen

but should I go for the:

Intel® Core™ i7-7820HK (Quad-Core, 8 MB cache, overgeklokt tot 4,4 GHz

NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1080 met 8 GB GDDR5X

or is this enough:

Intel® Core™ i7-7700HQ (Quad-Core, 6 MB cache, tot 3,8 GHz met Turbo Boost,

NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 met 8 GB GDDR5

Does it really influence my performance and what is the bottleneck

Tnx for Advice,

Remco

From my experience VRAM is important especially if you ever plan to use vegetation which without a proxy system will eat your VRAM fast, so my advice is to go for the most you can afford.

Tnx, Solo!

@enscape team: I definately want to move in my projects with a Oculus of Vive (with is the best for now?), I will buy my Alienware for at least for a couple of years and in the meantime there will be updates from Oculus and Vive I guess wich will affect the hardwaredemands, can you say something about that issue in choosing between cards

Hi @RemcoNL_1 I would recommend you to pick up the Oculus with the GTX 1080.

The Oculus has the more optimized usability and the GTX 1080 around ~20% more power than the 1070 which is essential for VR.

Hi Jonathan, thanks for advice! So the Oculus is preferable above the HTC Vive?

Both VR Headsets are great, but implementing the positioning system of the HTC is more complex than the one of the Oculus.

So therefor you can use the HTC Vive currently only with flymode in Enscape.

For now the Oculus Rift would be my choice.

@Jonathan_Knoefel will the issues with flymode and the HTC VIVE be resolved anytime soon?

@DanS_1 we want to support it in the future. But I cannot say a definite date at the moment.

Or wait a little longer and get one with a 1080ti in it… It’s reportedly ~35% faster than a standard 1080 and only costs $100 more (although I think they may have dropped the price of the 1080 now). http://www.tweaktown.com/news/56945/gtx-1080-ti-powered-gaming-laptops-coming-soon/index.html

Definitely the 1080ti is current king, I have 2 in my machine and wished Enscape supported multi gpu.

But wait! - Nvidia just announced the new Titan XP today, meaning the 1080ti’s reign has been short lived. It costs twice as much though and is unlikely to be offered in a laptop.

Yeah there will be new better tech all over again, but you cannot buy a 1080 Ti in a laptop right now neither a Titan X.

So @RemcoNL_1 I’ll stay with my advice  but if you can wait longer and the 1080 Ti gets available in Laptops, maybe in 2 months from now, I would hit that one.

Yes tnx, Jonathan and others, yesterday I ordered the Alienware with 1070, cause the 1080 and Ti (later) will cost me a bit too much… I guess I can get along for a time for now, and: next week we are going to order a floating license!! YEAH

So the next step will be a choice between the Oculus or the Vive → I need:

  • roomscale experience, with moving in a square 4x4m

  • gliding witch controllers,

  • teleporting

Good choice as well!

At the moment I would recommend you the Oculus Rift cause we haven’t implemented the positioning system of the HTC Vive completely so far as mentioned above.

You’ll get roomscale experience: https://www.oculus.com/blog/oculus-roomscale-tips-for-setting-up-a-killer-vr-room/

And you can fly (glide) and teleport with the Xbox or the Oculus touch controllers and can walk around as well.

Hi Jonathan, tnx for detailed info, I will look at that information
