Rig help

I’m thinking of assembling a new rig, so far i’ve mostly worked on single cpu machines, which i used to overclock, but nothing too extreme.

I was looking at brand names, like dell or boxx, but other than the basics, it seems like you’re paying a premium for the stuff that you don’t really need. Like, i don’t see an option for a smaller SSD drive, and the ones they offer are $$$$$. I was thinking of a dual cpu rig, but i’ve absolutely no idea which series are contemporary. I was also thinking of keeping the gpu and hdd on some basic level, like maybe two really small SSD drives in raid, (i used to do that with raptors back in the day). I figure if you cut corners on that, you can get a lot of juice out of the cpus. I havent used the RT thing once, i just need something that can chew glossy reflections, and stuff like grass/foliage and spit it out in no time. I see that dual socket motherboards average around 500 bucks, what makes sense at this time, two 6 core xeons, 8 core ones?

But for the for the price of 1 dual XEON system, can’t you probably get 2 maybe 3 i7’ pc’s that will together kick the XEON’s butt?

I guess u need workstation render farm… Now there are good news and bad news and it depends if u want to get ur hands dirt…

Good news is u can get EVGA SR 2 - + 2x 6core xeon and OC the heck out of it to 4.5ghz
The bad news is that the new EVGA SR X is useless for the moment because INTEL fully blocked xeons and u cant OC them anymore.
The good news is that old xeons for SR 2 are going down in price so look for deals !

The Raid system with SSD on EVGA is bad, their sata connection is bottlenecked so u need PCI-E to max out ur SSD…

Whats the price tag?

I suggest getting 2x ocz vertex 3 - now they have highest speed - but also highes failure rate… hehe =D I had 1 broken out of box… in any case… with 2x u can get 1gb transfer up/down at some points…
48gb of ram cost u around 200£ or so so quite cheap…

Recently I’m considering SuperMicro rack-mount server such as http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/1U/5017/SYS-5017C-MF.cfm as small render farm.

The renderfarm will be using E3-1270 which is reasonably in price (price of i7-2600k!) and have almost identical performance as i7-2700k (before overclock). With more budget I’m considering Dual E5-2630, then I can maximize the space. To be fix into APC rack enclosure, probably 3-8 server in one rack.

The APC enclosure is expensive but it’s sound-proof NetShelter CX Mini look great to house the renderfarm in the same room where you are sitting.

What do you guys think? I never really build a rack solution but the price of E3 & E5 Xeon looks pretty feasible for me to do so right now, despite without the overclock we will see performance loss in terms of $$$ paid out.

I say go get desktop PC overclock it, jank it in to RACK and enjoy. Ull get more and cheaper power in rack. / U cant OC E5 xeons

I have placed order SuperMicro SC813TQ-520C for storage server. If good will consider to go for 2U Twins solution. What about you Dusan Bosnjak?

This is not the prettiest case, but it seems pretty neat with this feature to remove the mobo panel and mount it separately.

I’m also thinking watercooling:

Vid card is where i would save for now, and just get something basic for now.

Some Silverstone cases have a removable mobo and do look much better than this one;)
That being said, I have a case with a removable mobo panel and never used it the 5 years I owned it. I guess it makes sense if you’re testing hardware or constantly changing cpus. Other than that, I wouldnt base my choice on this feature alone.

I am at a loss with what to do about ram. I was set on getting this kit:

ripjaws Z 8x8 16000mhz cas10

But they were out of stock today, so i started doing more research, and even placed an order for the same memory but a 4x8 kit… which i cancelled.

Pretty much the main reason why i bought a sabertooth was that the 8x8 kit had it listed as a compatable board on the g.skill website. But i’ve been told on their forums that even at stock settings people have had trouble getting this kit to run with this particular mobo…

What should i do? My goal was to get the cpu to run at 4.5 or so.

  1. 4x8 what speed, which latencies
  2. 8x4 same thing
  3. 8x8 g.skill has two at a reasonable price, one at 1333 one at 1600

I have got similar rig and I went for Kingston 32 GB, I have attached more info. Those were recommended by people who are building workstations professionally. You will not gain anything buying faster RAM if you want to use 32GB or more.

Have you done any overclocking?

yes, it is running on 4.5.

What cooling solution are you using?

Thanks Tomek, that’s what I thought;)
I was hesitating between the Noctua and Corsair’s H100. Still reluctant to go the hydro route, so I’ll most probably go with the Noctua if it can give a stable 4.5ghz on the 3930k.
