Just got back from a day (V-Ray day!) at Siggraph, and what a disappoinment to see no Adesk booth at all. Downright creepy really. Makes you wonder what’s next…
But as usual these days, the bright spot was Chaos Group’s fine seminars - two of them - that were excellent and very informative. I wish there were more of you all (forumites) there…you would have enjoyed yourselves very much seeing the software you use every day being used in such high-profile projects. And of course the renders look great as usual.
From Vlado’s presentation on what we can expect from V-Ray v3 to very detailed and well thought-out presentations by Pixomodo, Method, ILM, Digital Domain, Scanline, and Zoic studios that went into great detail with shots, breakdowns and very good feedback to questions asked, there was never a dull moment. All kinds of shots from Star Trek: Into Darkness, Oblivion, Iron Man 3, Battleship, and much more were shown and wonderfully explained - not to mention the fine pipline-oriented presentation from Zoic. It was all about V-Ray, and a very respectable amount was done with 3DS Max with Maya in there as well of course.
Heck, at one point someone asked (IIRC) Chris Nichols from ILM why he chose the V-Ray renderer. He just said…“Look at those reflections in that floor! Where else are you going to get that?” He he…quite a moment if you like using V-Ray as much as many of us do…
And in a wonderfully fun and surprisingly stunning presentation, tech folks from Ikea showed us the beautiful high-end interior shots they have been creating with Max and V-Ray to supplement their furniture catalog photography for the past few years. Their enthusiasm was palpable and catching - you could really see how much they are enjoying what they are doing (and the software they have chosen!). Just a lot of fun and a great way to end the day.
So my props to everyone at Chaos Group who keeps this thing going and going so very, very well. In a time of some uncertainty it sure is nice to have someone we can really count on - especially after all the years I have been doing this. Please keep up the great work and continue to give me and many like me a real reason to still be in love with 3D DCC!
I’m not surprised Autodesk was not there. Seem to be the norm that the larger companies don’t feel the need to be present any longer. At CES there was no Microsoft… Even Apple no longer attend Macworld. Macworld/iWorld - Wikipedia
Why is there no recordings of the Siggraph on youtube? Is it forbidden to record a video there? Would be awesome if everyone could watch a presentation by V-Ray, not only people that actually can attend it personally.
David, at least part of the reason (in this case anyway) is that many of the presentations at the V-Ray seminars showed some apparently very sensitive stuff and there were strict restrictions on any cameras or cell phone recording in the room.
I was a bit shocked as well with the lack of Autodesk and Adobe booth, it seemed a bit empty. The good thing is that chaos group was in a small booth but very crowded, for me it was, together with The Foundry and Pixologic, the booth that attracted most of the interest from the visitors.
All in all it’s always good to have a chat with the guys from chaos group, I hope I didn’t bothered Vlado too much talking to him while walking on the street.
Too bad I had to go back on Wednesday and missed the vray day.
