Sub-pixel ON-OFF : phisical INCORRECT, noise and rendertime

Hi Vlado,

again =) my question/problem about Sub-pixel parameter. The images talk for me. The two images are identical. Just turn OFF-ON sub-pixel.
As you can see, with Sub-pixel OFF is much better and natural , but the rendering time sooo big and the noise so much.
I try many different settings: I’m not able to remove the noise in these images, with Universal Setting and low noise threshold. Or with the old school with high AA, high QMC, high subdivs and noise near to 0.003
Nothing! And, as you can see with Sub-pixel OFF, the image is so flat and the ceiling lamp look like turn off. But inside I have 3 bright VRaySphere lights. How is it possible!
Really, I’m trouble to render this image with Sub-pixel ON, with no noise and rendering time acceptable.

I’ve no noise with universal setting with noise 0.07, but rendering time, with one PC at 1920px gives me >45 hours
And I don’t want to talk you when the buckets are on the glass lamps…

And again, I have nothing new to say in that regard. Since we don’t have adaptive multibounce sampling yet, you will have to find other ways to remove the sources of the noise. This may include, for example, using the VRayOverrideMtl material to make your materials simpler for GI, limiting the number of reflection/refraction bounces, disabling reflection/refraction GI caustics (if they are enabled) etc.

  • sub-pixel and Clamp OFF

  • Affect background ON

  • Don’t affect colors (adaptation only) OFF

  • Linear workflow OFF

  • AA 1 50

  • QMC 100

  • all reflection subdivs 100

  • all refraction subdivs 8

  • 0.85 | 0.01 | 8 | 1

Noise is muuuch less, but not acceptable in production. The bad new is that 800x600, with 4 esacore @ 3.9Ghz = 2h00min…
When the buckets are on the lamps take hours to render…

The big, big problem is on the glass lamps, where the buckets take ages. Also near reflective objects. But Vlado, clear :wink: We will wait. Thank you.

The progressive rendering in V-Ray 3.0 will also help somewhat in that regard; right now you have to wait for all buckets to complete in order to have an image that you can show - but in progressive mode, even if the glass objects aren’t quite done yet, you still have an image to show.

I reduced the three VRaylights inside the lamps from 140 to 10. The sampling now is much better and the rendering time too.
But it’s always high from my point of view with 4 PC.

About my scene. I reduced from 10 to 5 the lights intensity… The rendering time a little bit better.
How do you see the rendering sampling? :slight_smile:

Ehh me too! Yes Morbid.. better with QMC+LC.
Here just another test. (ugly). but 1h30 min with 4 Esacore is too much! See how much noise.
Don’t look the left wall. There is a super-tiny specular map. In the floor too much bump, I know.
But ee the ceiling Just a little bump noise, but nothing to extreme. a lot of noise.
And also in the other objects. DOF in camera.
Also the jagged edges AA near a bright areas

Btw have you tried making the glass elements invisible to GI? It seems to me that some of the noise comes from light being refracted through the tiny crystals.

Also a prime candidate for splitting the render into passes - one with and one without the glass elements, so you can individually control render settings for speed and quality.

cecofuli have you ever tried maxwell for your interiors or another renderer in general? just curious how others deal with such complex interiors?

Morbid, ohh, yes, yes! It’s in my TO DO list. But not this project. Now it completed. In the next I would like to try a different renderer. But, as Vlado wrote, form this complex interior (all glossy wall with tiny specular map, many indidect light, VRaylight inside a complex glass lamps, sub-pixel mapping OFF etc…) the solution is to wait the next V-Ray Brute force progressive rendering.

Since your interiors are probably one of the most complicated i’ve seen, it would be nice to try them with something like maxwell and see how it holds up. Soon though its all gonna be RT…just a few more years of wait :slight_smile:

haha…I’ve looked at your scenes before and in my opinion they are setup verywell, Im not sure what I can do to improve it. Converting it to another render is a long task for just a simple test…But maybe worth it? I don’t have the newest gpu hardware so it will be pointless to try it, only with RT cpu.

My preference would be in maya! everything in maya!

When I have time, I would like to do. Maybe with this scene =)
