I´v played around a bit with the absorbtion and got some nice effects but when I try to turn on translucent to get colored shadows the whole object turns completly black. I’v turnoed on vray shadows and gi but still no success. I looked at the tutorials avaliable but i cant get the same effect as they did. I followed a tutorial exactly but as soon as i come to the point were i should turn on translucency to get colored transparent shadows the whole object looks like its being filled with shadow.
I saw that other people had the same problem but i could’nt find a thread that found an answer. I use max 6 with the latest demo-version.
Yes those worked just fine and I also downloaded a final sceene for one of the tutorials i tries for sss and it worked fine to. When i try to make my own material from scratch though It´s still all black. I think they must have missed something in the tutorial. Something that has to be turned on or changed or something. I tried a lot of options but i just can’t find it, so i still need an answer to my problem.
I have it set to 1 unit = 1 centimeter, metric system and the object is 120 centimeters in diameter. It’s not double sided. and the material and render setup is as showed in the image on this link:
Perhaps it could have something to do woth caustics. When i have the translucent togle off the render shows thet its calculating caustics but not when the toggle is on. Byt i still cant find a checkbox or nnumber to shange that makes a differance.
There’s a bug in translucency - if the fog colour is set to pure white i.e. the default colour - RGB 255, 255, 255 - then translucency doesn’t render and appears black. The same is true if any of any of the fog colour RGB values are set to 255. Try dropping the colour values to 254 or less and see if that fixes your problem (i’m guessing that the red in your fog colour might be the culprit)
This is a consistant bug I found with several versions of vray - currently running version 1.09.03m on Max4 on windows XP. Hope it gets fixed at somepoint. Or at least change the default fog colour to something usable.
Oh, and make sure your translucent obect is set to recieve/generate GI under Vray::System → Object Settings. That can sometimes help - particularly if you’re using skylight to light your scene.
And just having looked at the image your settings, try lowering the Refract Glossiness lower settings give greater/brighter translucency, so whack it down to 0.1 and see if that makes a difference.
If that doesn’t help, try upping the translucency Thickness. Higher values (in the hundreds) seems to makes for more obvious translucency. Lower values, give a more subtle effect. (Although the scale of your object has a big impact on this)
And if all else fails get crazy with the Light multiplier, and amplify the thing till it glows like the sun.
Thank you se7en you solved it. It was the fact that the red was at 255 just lowered it to 254 and it worked just fine.
I really apriciate the help all of you gave. Thanks for making it a great forum. one little number has given me two days of trouble I can believe this.
