V-Ray 6 - GI and Light Mix Render Elements looking completely different after upgrading from Vray 5.3

TLDR: I created the scene in 3ds Max 2022 and V-Ray 5.3. After installing and rendering with V-Ray 6 my render elements started looking drastically different. I didn’t change any settings when migrating. The largest discrepancies are in the VRayGlobalIllumination pass and VRayLightMix passes, but the RGB looks the same. The VRay 5 images are the results from final bucket renders, and the V-Ray 6 elements were IPR renders. The discrepancies still show up when bucket rendering in V-Ray 6, but the GI pass is completely black instead of just darker. Additionally the Self Illumination pass from the light-mix element does does not render the light cast on nearby objects.

After encountering these discrepancies I re-installed V-Ray 5 to see if I could I have accidently changed some setting, but I got the correct results. I then re-installed V-Ray 6, and the discrepancies returned. With V-Ray 6 still installed, I tried opening an entirely different scene I had made with V-Ray 5, and the render results were the pretty much the same as they were in V-Ray 5.

The attached link shows a comparison between elements from V-Ray 5 and V-Ray 6. The V-Ray 5 results show a much brighter GI pass, and lighting passes that contain more lighting detail. The V-Ray 6 results show a darker GI pass with almost no diffuse information and the light mix passes appear to be lacking indirect illumination/bounce light resulting in much darker shadows.

Are these discrepancies part of the new update or did I accidently change some setting that is causing these passes to look different?

My colleague and I have been trouble shooting and we are leaning towards this being an issue between the lightmix pass and the light cache engine specific to this scene only.

  • We switched the secondary engine to Brute Force and all passes looked normal, we switched back to light cache and the passes looked wrong
  • With Brute Force and Light Cache as engines, we deleted all the render elements and just added VRayGlobalIllumination. IPR showed correct GI pass
  • We then added lightmix, and the GI pass went dark

I’m not sure if this is a bug or a setting at this point, but I at least know I can use brute force to get the results I want!

Hi @mpfonzen ,

We haven’t stumbled on such a behavior with scenes saved in V5. As you mentioned this is happening possibly only with this particular scene/setup, can you share it with us so we can have a look? Make sure that all relevant assets are included (if possible, we’d prefer a simplified version of the scene).
You can forward it via our contact form, just mention this thread in the subject. Thanks!
