V-Ray: Cel shading or toon shading

Hi all,
I wish to ask if there is any desire, will or interest to perfect Cel shading in V-Ray?

Have you seen IllustrateForMax ?

They used it in the Ghost in the Shell cartoons.

I was wandering if a cel shading system can be made y chaos group? - a complex system thats easy to use and works with vray.

Is the vray toon really comprehensive like illustrate?

Thanks

Hi,

We tend to use toon allot but find it quite limited in what it can do. It would be great if vray toon could do sketch rendering like C4D or sketchup. A bit like this

Haven’t tried it myself, but take a look at this:

Not bad for $6

Pencil3 and FinalToon are nice for this stuff.

I’ve used Illustrate! for Max on and off for nearly 20 years - it’s great, fantastic quality, really fast and ‘inks the lines’ thick and thin like I used to when working on the drawing board with Rotring pens.

But I think that David Gould has probably moved on to other things, there’s been no new features for years (not that it needs a great deal) and despite new builds I’ve been unable to get it working in the last few versions of Max which is why I still have Max 2014 still installed.

The Toon renderer in VRay is OK but lacks the flexibility of thick and thin lines that Illustrate has.

I would love to see a really nice line renderer from Chaos Group

+1

Been wanting that forever

I’d like to see it as a plain extension to Vray. If Vray is a realistic renderer then spending budget on toon stuff might be hard to justify. But if it’s a separate project with separate developers and pricing then maybe it’s easier. I’d pay $100 easy for it.

I started getting addicted to the Chaos group forums with my many feature requests.

Its a bit too easy to make suggestions

The best things is that Vlado is always in control. He resists hype and tends to know whats best.

That being said, it is my job as a user to be annoying with my requests, to ask freely as if there are no restrictions.

This is a good setup. People should be free to ask or talk about anything or even start a debate.

In the end most ideas dont work out but some get through.

Vlado-Ray always manages to be an incredible tool

Also, I think a part of Vray is really what Vlado want to see and make…If Vlado found toon shading to be really exciting Im sure he would do it.

I just imagined Vray coming with the kind of cell shaders that can make my scene look like from Ghost in the Shell

And there is this video breakdown I found called Paths of Hate

Fast forward to about 10:08

V-Ray is a photo realistic renderer, but strengthening Toon ink shaders will greatly expand the range of use of V-Ray.

In Japan, Softimage XSI 's Ink Line Shader was highly evaluated.
(It was developed for STUDIO GHIBLI)

I dream that V-Ray will implement this level of Ink Shader.
Additional cost is also okay.

It is completely +1.

It would be great if vray could do extended lines and also line thickness, at present its not great. We have finaltoon and its better but would like vray to handle it all.

I’d already be happy if VRay would implement the open source toon-renderer Freestyle: http://freestyle.sourceforge.net/

XSI had some amazing tools for it.

+1 from me as well for a proper toon shader and not just out dated strokes. We do motion design and all my 3d animations are rendered in c4d default toon cause vray is lacking it. Hope one day to see a good toon in vray  cheers

It’s something I’d like to research eventually, but it will be some time before we get to it. FinalToon and Pencil+ are good solutions in the meantime.

Best regards,
Vlado

When you do make it, its going to be the best.

Arnold started advanced toon.
V-Ray … ? :rage:

Can chaos group work with Japanese people to make a better one?

I always loved this (was done with VRay)…

Yes, we plan to work on that in the coming months.
