Video Card Purchase

I am ready to pull the trigger on a new video card. Which one would you suggest?

GeForce GTX 980
GeForce GTX 970

They both have 4GB, but the 980 is $200 more on EBay.

The GTX 970 has 1664 Cuda Cores, the 980 has 2048. I assume you should choose between your workflow. And even if you need Cuda Cores, maybe spend some more and get 2 970 and a new PSU  For my workflow, i hardly use RT, and therefor i would go for the 970.

Hope it helps
Ralf

970 for sure. The price to performance ratio just doesn’t justify the extra cost for the 980.

For what purpose would this be?
If it’s for RT GPU, go for it,
If it’s for viewport performances, you might want to consider a quadro

Stan

It’s for viewport performance.

970 for viewports

Okay, 970 it is!

make sure you dell has enough space in the case to fit it!

I will, thanks.

Dell recommends:

ATI FirePro V5900
NVIDIA Quadro® 4000
NVIDIA Quadro® 2000

Entry 3D:
ATI FirePro\™ V4800
NVIDIA Quadro 600

Professional 2D:
NVIDIA Quadro® NVS 420 quad monitor card
NVIDIA Quadro® NVS 295

If the 5000/6000 fit, which I had and is huge, this should fit.

see if the geforce matches the length of the quadro 6000 and also its height as they can be quite fat.

you’ll be fine, the quadro is way way bigger.

Well, I didn’t have the quatro in this box, but it does imply that’ll fit in this box (otherwise it would be dumb to recommend it). The box I had it in, it didn’t fit, so I had the box hanging open. I wasn’t happy at all with that card; it wasn’t worth the $2000

I’ll spec sizes out before I purchase.

I still recommend the k4200 as I have had really amazing feedback from it.
Cheap and only 5-10% viewport difference with the really high end k5000 and k6000.

But, it’s $1000 more expensive than the 970.

it’s 3x as much as the 970, and the 970 is faster.

I bought recently a 780ti, couldn’t be happier with the card. Under $1 grand, quiet less power consumption, works well in max/maya. In fact I did comparison between quadro 4000 I have in my dell and this one and it outperforms the quadro even in viewport, even in component editing modes which is where quadro suppose to win.

I’m personally hoping that rumor about 8GB version of 970/980 is true. After seeing what new RT can do (with working noise threshold (adaptive rendering) and LC) I believe that in 2-3 years 95% of content we produce will be rendered in GPU (CUDA). And 8GB of memory is good starting point. Also they are quite cheap. From my initial tests I can tell that 4 x 970 ($1596) can be as fast as 24 x i7 4770K ($8040) and this price doesn’t take into account other PC components.

I’m working with a k4000 now, and I’m not impressed at all. haven’t worked with a quadro in years, and as I expected it’s not really worth the money. at least if you work with 3ds max, don’t know how they may perform with other 3d programs.
