Vray 5.2 gpu... Vram

Hi Muhammed

Since i am using the chaos cosmos trees, and with those i almost run out of vram for some proyects… How things are going with your internal build with vram for vray gpu???, Do You think with update 2 is going to take less vram than update 1??? Vram is probably the most important thing for vray gpu, if it doesnt feet in your gpu You won’t render any kind of scene.
I use all the time RTX with My 2080 ti with nvlink, do You see an improvement with vram for vray gpu update 2 for RTX or cuda???

Thanks Muhammed
Best regards

Hello

When the scene is too large to fit in the video memory, check the new Out of Core option

This will use your system RAM when the VRAM is not enough for the project to render. Note that the RAM memory is usually much slower than the VRAM, therefore you might experience slowdowns.
To minimize the slowdowns please use this option when it is absolutely needed.

Hi slavcho.brusev

Thanks for these options that You suggest

1. out of core is not Even ready with 3d max with update 2, i think is going to be the same for sketchup… Is going to take at least 6 months more to be ready for use ( eviction textures dont work) and Also cuda is slower than RTX, the render is going to take forever
2. On demand bit mapping always gives a error, is kind of a lottery, this option has never worked for me, and Also You have to use TX files for this option to work

3. Resize textures is not an option, i work a Lot on the textures, using this option makes textures looks awfull
When i was asking about vram usage i mean about the compresión when is calculating the render, before the image appears on the vfb, when it said " compacting build for optix", or something similar.

For example… How things are going to change in this subject with Vray gpu light cache, is more than 8 months since the release of update 1, are we going to see a better usage of vram with vray gpu light cache??? I hope we can get a Boost speed with this new option, but how about vram usage???

Thanks in advance

Hi Luis,

The difference in VRAM usage is very close between update 1 and 2, you most likely will not notice a difference
For update 2 the focus was on shading features like SSS and Thin-walled mode, and other improvements to the GPU workflow

I totally agree!
Memory management is very important to the development team, we always have discussions on how we can improve that. Our goal is to make V-Ray GPU as memory efficient as possible so you can fit all your assets into the GPU memory
We have plans to improve memory management moving forward. It is part of GPU roadmap, and near top of our current priorities

Best,
Muhammed

Hi Muhammed

I was thinking options for this subject in the weekend ( about vram), for example one option can be… send the scene directly to standalone with one button, i don’t know how difficult can be this to have that option, i remembered some months ago using this option and found a better use for the vram, but Open it, whrite the codes, is not an easy step and Also sometimes is annoy using vray standalone, with this option vray doesnt care about sketchup just the vray scene, in the past sometimes this gives me an error.
The last question… Can You show me in a vídeo how to import from the beginning to standalone a vray file from sketchup it had never worked for me… Maybe i’m doing something wrong, there is a vídeo with 3d max and maya… But not for sketchup… I Will really appreciated that help Muhhamed
Thanks in advance

Thanks for the suggestion Luis, This is something I used to do in Modo/Maya in the past. Render with Standalone and close the host DCC, to free up as much VRAM as possible
I will check the SketchUp workflow for this, and let you know.

Best,
Muhammed

Hi Muhhamed

I did a test… Vray standalone doesnt work… What’s going in on??? If You have an emergency… You can’t do nothing!!!
Same settings with vray 5 for sketchup than vray scene with standalone…everything is the same… standalone doesnt Match vray 5.1 with sketchup Open… Finally it doesnt work… Chaos cosmos is great… But if You run out of memory… You can’t use it and Also materials for chaos cosmos is coming and is going to be the same… No space for new materials, and Also with standalone is almost the same vram
Thanks Muhammed

I don’t want to bother or distract vray team, but just take a note… For vray 6 or whatever is next… Vray gpu alpha channel and the vram problems
Thanks

Thanks for the feedback like always Luis

Memory management is highest priority to us, we have plans for improvements like what I explained above. kernel 3 is part of that, Light Cache consumes way less memory when kernel 3 is used for rendering(nearly half the memory in my testing)
We are working hard on polishing kernel 3, adding features and making it production ready
About standalone, I’m going to test this and get back to you

Best,
Muhammed

Hi Muhammed
I really like this update and thanks so much to vray Chaos team, i know You work hard to bring us the most excited features.
I did a test right now with update 2 and vray gpu light cache only gives me a vram problems and a crash, i did 6 test with the same scene ( update 1 ) renders fine, but vray gpu light cache doesnt work, takes too much vram, i turned off vray fur and vray displacement and still doesnt work, i didnt try the other features… I can’t render… I did a test with a second scene it failed again, don’t know what is happening vray gpu with update 2 takes too much vram

Thanks Muhhamed

@luisgamino2

Can you try with BF/BF GI, turning off Light Cache
Does it render for you ?
Also can you try with progressive mode?

We just deployed a fix that solves memory issues with light cache. This is gonna be moved to stable builds ASAP

Best,
Muhammed

Hi Muhhamed

Let me do a test with brute force + brute force Vray gpu with light cache with buckets and progressive didnt work Muhhamed takes too much vram, i’m very excited with this new feature and i would like to conserve update 2

Im going to make another tests to see what’s happening, but seems vram problems, fills very quickly the vram

Thanks for the fast feedback

I did a test brute force + brute force is the same Muhhamed, didnt work, did a test with cuda both on progressive and buckets didnt work, then changed to a very light scene it didnt work only gives crashes, right now is imposible to render a scene with update 2 vray gpu

When it crashed, it crashed very heavy You can’t Even return to sketchup, You can’t turn off vray or sketchup i have to turn off My computer, with this new update vray gpu crashes so heavy that makes My work station almost in a freeze stage

Can you update your driver to 496.14
You need to restart the machine first, then install driver, then restart and test V-Ray

This might be an issue with GPU drivers, let me know if this works

All right let me do that Muhhamed

Thanks
i found driver GeForce Game ready 496.49 WHQL is that ok that option Muhhamed??

I installed that driver Muhhamed the newest and is the same, it doesnt render, only gives me a crash, i have been spending the whole morning just to render a scene… Everything fails for vray gpu, i’m tired about this, don’t know what is happening

I did a test in a very simple scene it renders but takes a Lot of vram with this new update

Imposible to render a simple medium heavy scene, vray gpu light cache takes a Lot of vram, but a Lot, really a Lot

As a feedback vray gpu needs a very special attention!!! Im going to return to update 1, vray gpu light cache doesnt work at all!!! Please fix that problem, i was so happy with the news today, then tried it and then it doesnt work, i am going to install the update 2 but when this feature is ready, probably a hotfix or something but Right now i can’t use it, only gives me a serius crash.
Thanks
