Vray7 denoiser issues

A couple of issues I’ve noted in the VFB with the denoiser so far, unless there’s some option that I’m missing:

  • Denoiser no longer auto updates after render starts. At least on GPU. Haven’t tested on CPU yet. It doesn’t even turn on after the third iteration as was usual before.
  • Sometimes, even turning it on and clicking update is not enough. It’ll either show a previous render denoiser pass, or stay on a super noisy iteration of the denoiser.

This is all using the intel open denoiser. I also have lightmix on.

There has been a change regarding the “Post effects rate” parameter in GPU. The change consists of disabling the parameter (set to 0, hence no updates) when using the Progressive Sampler on GPU Production rendering. It was made so as not to affect performance. There’s a note regarding the change here. The IPR behavior remains unchanged.

Is there a way to turn this back on? IPR is not enough for testing things in most cases.

Also, why would the intel denoiser affect render performance if it’s running on CPU? Furthermore it says on that page that “When using production rendering with Progressive sampler the Post-effects update rate option is disabled to avoid any performance loss. To update the denoiser, select the denoiser layer in the VFB and click on Calculate.”. But I click calculate and nothing happens.

I’m not sure. I’ll ask around.

Because the denoising process disturbs (mini-pause) the rendering so that it’s calculated. It affects all denoiser engines.

Make sure the VRayDenoiser layer is not hidden (eye icon).

Ok, appreciate it.

I see.Still, it should be an option. Just removing this functionality outright seems extreme.

Sigh. Sorry, but this is not a helpful answer. The layer is on. I’ve tested this multiple times now with different scenes. It always happens.

Any news on this? I ended up reverting to vray 6 for now.

Sorry to say, it cannot be disabled. In my tests, updating the VRayDenoiser works as expected. You just need to wait it out.

Updating the denoiser manually works on my side, if it doesn’t we need to reproduce this on our side to fix it.
We disabled the denoiser for production rendering because it tanks the performance, every time the denoiser updates it interrupts the rendering process(this happens more than once every second). Rendering becomes significantly slower than with Denoiser off. Here is the GPU usage graph, with Denoiser on/off
The intel Denoiser now runs on GPU, in V-Ray 6 it was running on CPU and there was big performance loss as well.

That’s all good and understandable. But the issue is still there of not being able to update. I think I know what situation is causing it though. If I do the denoiser and also have lightmix on, it does the first update, and then it doesn’t do it anymore. No matter how many times I click update. Once the render is finished, it updates correctly. If I turn off lightmix entirely though, as in, remove the render pass, then the update button works correctly again, and I can see what the denoiser is doing as the render progresses. If the lightmix situation can be fixed, I think it’s a good compromise.

Thanks for the information, if I reproduce on my side I will make sure this gets fixed.
I will update you shortly

I’m able to reproduce the issue, it seems to be related to Light Mix indeed. We will fix it ASAP

Great! I’m glad I was able to pinpoint the issue.

Is there any updates on this matter? I just upgraded to Vray7 recently - and experiencing the same problems. Lightmix/Gpu/Progressive. I do alot of start/stop renderings and im very dependant on getting updates from the Intel denoiser. Its ok if I have to update it manually pushing a button in the VFB. I tried installing the latest stable build from nightlies and reading the patch notes, tried it in a scene, seems not to be adressed yet? any eta? Also is there a reason why it doesnt auto start as in vray6 after 48passes is that because its on GPU now? I have calculate denoiser Enabled in my VFB rolldown but the eye is inactive so I have to click it manually also each time to enable it when I render.

There should be a fix soon, it should work with Light Mix but it needs to be done manually
It should work just fine in the IPR

Muhammed

Sounds good can’t come fast enough! :O)
