Heya,
after playing a bit with hairs and fur rendering I have one wish ![]()
Is it possible to add a color randomisation to the VRay hair shaders?
That would be awesome!
Thanks in advance.

That’s also something our artists ask very often about VRayMtlHair3.
You can achieve it with textures, but it would be easier with an attribute.
Cheers.
So how does this work UI wise? Just a “randomize” spinner for each of the colors (diffuse/primary/secondary/transmission)? Also do we randomize the color hue or the brightness, or both?
Best regards,
Vlado
I think “diffuse” is the most useful one (and also primary ? not sure), no need to add too much spinners.
I think there are 4 useful attributes (Shave and Haircut has all of them) :
1: Random Hue.
2: Random Brightness.
3: Mutant Hair Color. (for example grey)
4: Percent Mutant Hairs. (for example 10% of hairs would have “Mutant Hair Color” instead of the main color.
Attributes (1) and (2) are the most useful ones.
And (3) and (4) are quite nice when you want to render a salt and pepper hair.
Thanks.
Hm, but normally hair has no diffuse color - most of the hair coloring comes from the transmission color and the secondary highlight (they are often locked together).

Vlado
Oooopss…
Is there one that affects all others ?
1: Random Hue.
2: Random Brightness.
3: Mutant Hair Color. (for example grey)
4: Percent Mutant Hairs. (for example 10% of hairs would have “Mutant Hair Color” instead of the main color.
5: Random saturation
This could also be put in the hair sampler to be able to connect it every there I want.
Sidenote. A node which does color randomization on a per object/hair basis would be triple awesome ![]()
