Wagon Wheel Effect

Hello,

For the life of me I can’t correct a wagon wheel effect of my animated tires. I have tired a bunch of settings like shutter angles, shutter offsets, geometry samples, different camera types, animation adjustments for slower tires but nothing corrects the issue. Any thoughts how I can fix this issue? Here is one of my files with the issue.

Cheers

I lied lol still doing the wagon wheel affect.

Adjusted wheel rotation to be 25% slower and a touch slower shutter speed. Seems to do the trick but wasn’t sure if there was another solution without adjusting animation keys?

After some research, I managed to create the effect on a free-spinning simple wheel. In a few words, what needs to be done is to set the wheel’s rotation angle so that the spokes align slightly behind the rotation angle of the previous frame. AI gave me this formula:

F * (2*pi/N - 0.05)

Where F is the frame number (used in the 3ds Max Float Script expression), N is the number of spokes, and -0.05 is the small offset.

I assigned a Float Script controller to the Z Rotation and put the following:
F * (2*pi/16 - 0.05) * -1

Added the * -1 myself to turn it clockwise. Here’s the result and scene.

I colored a polygon red to illustrate the “real” rotation direction. The effect is visible in the 3ds Max viewport; there is no particular need for motion blur to reproduce it.

When the wheel is moving, obviously, it gets more complicated, but I just wanted to show you that it is a matter of syncing the rotation with the frames, so your solution seems pretty valid.

Thanks sir yeah I ended up writing a script that help me analyze tire animations and adjust the animation to help with this issue. Seems to be working out so far.
