I’m on x64 and using the latest AVG professional edition engine which came out a couple of months ago. It seems to be freezing my system in certain areas suddenly whereas in the past previous were excellent.
What does everyone else use and what do you recommend?
I’ve got avast. seems to work alright.
I guess you would have to find a sketchy site to test it out.
i use AVG Free Home Edition at the house and Norton360 at work, both of which have never given me any problems…
same here AVG 8.0 slow down system a lot , i think it is resident shield and link scanner , if you disable them, it should be fine.
Avira here. NOD is claimed to be damn good to. I used to have it at home and it does have a VERY minimal footprint.

i’m using nod32 for both 32 and 64bit systems, highly recommended.
I hear a lot of good things about NOD. I’m paying for a year’s subscription of AVG so I just migrated back down to 7.5. But regardless, it’s still good to see what all you experts out there are using recently.
As for Norton - ugh that’s some resource hungry bloated software. From my experience it caused a noticeable lag whenever I tried to open applications.
My final straw with Norton was when I moved the start menu shortcut on two comps (one of them being a neighbor’s comp) and it caused boot errors. I didn’t know this caused the boot errors at the time even after searching on the Internet so I reformatted both of those computers.
I use the free AVG edition at home, and none at work :S
I know it’s quite bad but I haven’t gotten around to installing anything.
Free AVG at home is excellent. The professional 8.0 version is crap though, and uses huge resources. Not surprisingly, when they finally make an effort to become a profitable company, they screw up their software…
NOD sounds good. Need to check it out.
HAH! well, you’ll notice I just said that I never had PROBLEMS with Norton. I didn’t say I don’t have “personal issues” with it! 
The company I work for has used it for years and likes it, so I get the benefit of years of experience, right? 
kaspersky here, works fine.
We have had NOD, but then there were some problems with 64bit or something.. dunno remember anymore.
I have been pretty happy with trend micro for the past few releases, using at work and at home on 2 machines…might check out this NOD though.
im using NOD at work on a XP64-system and it seems really good. Dont know if its better or worse than other softwares when it comes to cleaning infected files (ive never had any on this system) but it updates itself all the time with new virus databases and never seems to slow down the computer. (unlike AVG which I use at home)

it does not slow down your comp, has got overall protection and is absolutely safe to use 
i cannot do anything else than recommend it!!!

AVG 8 here and I am liking it. I have the one with the firewall built in. I was using Avast free, but I feel much safer with AVG Pro.
I use Bit Defender at home and recommend AVG Free and Comodo Firewall Free to friends and family looking for something cheap and decent. At work I’m stuck with eTrust Antivirus, by Computer Associates, and it’s a horrible product.
kaspersky all the way for us, have had no issues with it and will never go back to Norton.
