When I render using DR, my rendering finishes up faster, but I still cannot work within the file to do other things. Is there a way around this?
You can queue it through backburner.
Best regards,
Vlado
Isn’t backburner completely separate from Vray DR? I thought you either used backburner or DR.
I have never had any luck running DR over Backburner. Never works properly.
You can queue DR renders through backburner ![]()

I still don’t understand how that works and can’t
Find any material explanation for using both DR and back burner
Together.
Go to your task manager, right mouse click 3dsmax.exe, and remove some CPU’s from the Set Affinity… option

I’m pretty sure you just setup a single frame render, with DR turned on with the option “Save hosts in the scene”. Turn on netrender and send it. Most of the time, it’s just the 1 machine I send the job to that does 100% of the rendering.
I use BB and DR together all the time, and for this purpose.
Add all your slaves to the DR list in your work file, queue the render in BB and fire it away. The BB server will start the job and will pick up the DR nodes that are active on the network, and named in the DR list you set in the file on your workstation. Works like a charm for me. The only problem I have at the moment is that my actual workstation doesn’t always want to join in properly, but that’s just not always been that way.
One thing you may need to do, and i can’t remember for sure so maybe Vlado can clarify: is to add all your nodes to the DR list on the *BB server* machine as well - but I don’t think it’s necessary.

We have this problem too. 1 in 10 times it’ll actually work, regardless of which machine it’s sent to. In a rush we end up sacrificing a max license and do some photoshop on another machine.
Weird - I only have 5 nodes, but they all work pretty flawlessly with this. I only render stills - not sure if single frame makes a difference?
I always use BB and DR togheter without issue; I don’t know if it’s crucial but for me the trick was finding the vray_dr.cfg file for every node and configure it correctly
we use DR + backburner on every day basis
the key is to check all the nodels in the vray render setup
you run the spawners on all the nodes
start manager and monitor on the main workstation and server on one of the nodes
send the job to the server and voila youre set
now if you want your workstation to render too, just run a spawner, it will get automatically picked up ![]()
Over the years I’ve searched this forum for an all inclusive “How to use DR and BB” but have only found little bits and pieces of the puzzle and these mostly written by people who assume their audience knows the nuances and lingo of BB. If some kind soul who has been doing this effectively on a daily basis would be willing to provide a step by step tutorial I for one would be extremely grateful.

It now works everytime for us. I had to open up Max on the server I want to send the job to, and add all of the DR nodes into Vray using the render settings dialog.
Now whenever a job gets sent to that server it will use all of the nodes for DR.
Worked for us
Sorry the question but using only DR by vray is it slower? What’s wrong using only VrayDistributiveRender with vrayspawner on each server marchine? why is needed to use BB I never understood this. Thanks in advance for the reply
You don’t need to, if you don’t want to
However, it is often more convenient, especially if you need to queue a bunch of renderings and don’t want to sit and wait for each one to finish before rendering the next.

Ok thanks for the reply. Anyway without BB I don’t wait for each calculation end I animate one camera putting it in one position for each frame and indicate the frames to caclulate to 3dsmax DR seems to works fine in this way.without BB.
