Hi !
Here's my little contribute to this thread...
Only direct caustics here using the "renderers.current.caustics_showCalcPhase=true " method.
don't render final image is ON. Only Photon pass.
- 1 light - 12000 photons fired
- 15min rendertime on Q6600@3.2 Ghz - Vray 1.5 SP3)
- render at 1600*2133 then half downsampled in photoshop to remove some grain.
The atomic caustics mushroom :
I've some little questions though :
- Wich caustics parameters are involved (or not) with this method ?
- Why the CPU is almost 70% while computing ? does i have to force system_numthreads to 4 yo get a full 100% computing ?
Awesome tip anymay, i'll continue to play with !
trying actually to make godrays with volumetric clouds... no chance for instance.. is it possible to combine 2 different environementfog in sp3 ? (i'll made a new thread for that if you think it's necessary

thanks !
nothing complex here.. just started with the "volumetric caustics scene" found on www.spot3d.com Vraydoc site (see examples : EnvironementFog page).
Just replaced the VraySphere with a standard sphere sliced by some boxes (proboolean) and playing with nurms subdivs... you can try with any object ! torus, knot, teapot, ... the main parameter for color is the material refract fog color. The camera is a close look to the caustics on the vrayplane. all the rest is random... and a little bit of photoshop (levels/lum-contrast)
That's the magic part : Vray did 99.9% of this pic ! and each try gives unique results... coooool !Last edited by Subburb; 03-04-2009, 12:58 PM.
