      Visible Caustics?

      Hi Vlado,

Is there any way to view the caustic photons that aren't contacting surfaces, the same way you can view an irradiance map using imapviewer?

      Thanks,
      Nathan.

No, currently there is no way to do that. I have it noted though, so hopefully it will be implemented at some point.

        Best regards,
        Vlado

          Visible caustics

Would there be any basic way to extract a txt file or something with the xyz of each photon.. or would that just be painfully huge?

          Thanks again,
          Nathan.

Well if you email me to vlado@chaosgroup.com I can get you the format of the .vrpmap files.

            Best regards,
            Vlado

              Hi !
Here's my little contribute to this thread...
Only direct caustics here using the "renderers.current.caustics_showCalcPhase=true " method.
don't render final image is ON. Only Photon pass.
              - 1 light - 12000 photons fired
              - 15min rendertime on Q6600@3.2 Ghz - Vray 1.5 SP3)
              - render at 1600*2133 then half downsampled in photoshop to remove some grain.

              The atomic caustics mushroom :

I've some little questions though :
              - Wich caustics parameters are involved (or not) with this method ?
              - Why the CPU is almost 70% while computing ? does i have to force system_numthreads to 4 yo get a full 100% computing ?

Awesome tip anymay, i'll continue to play with !

trying actually to make godrays with volumetric clouds... no chance for instance.. is it possible to combine 2 different environementfog in sp3 ? (i'll made a new thread for that if you think it's necessary

That looks really cool. Reminds me of something you'd see done in AE.

                    that is awesome.
So beautiful, look slike a painting.
what kind of geometry is producing it?

                      thanks !

nothing complex here.. just started with the "volumetric caustics scene" found on www.spot3d.com Vraydoc site (see examples : EnvironementFog page).

Just replaced the VraySphere with a standard sphere sliced by some boxes (proboolean) and playing with nurms subdivs... you can try with any object ! torus, knot, teapot, ... the main parameter for color is the material refract fog color. The camera is a close look to the caustics on the vrayplane. all the rest is random... and a little bit of photoshop (levels/lum-contrast)
That's the magic part : Vray did 99.9% of this pic ! and each try gives unique results... coooool !
