I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

Could you post the mat settings for that (first render). I know it wont work until we get out hands on RC4 final, but I have always had trouble creating a good soap SSS material, and that one with a few tweaks would be perfect.
      Here you are:

You can sort of get similar results with the Hard sss model, if this is what you mean...

          "affect shadows" is off?
          Strikes me as odd...
Could you elaborate a tiny bit on the model?

              From help:
Fog multiplier - the strength of the fog effect. Values above 1.0 are not recommended.

I think the biggest problem with using physical sss is, displacement and sss together. Any time I have come accross this, it always resulted in long render times.

There is really only one way around this - using interpolation for the sss.
