I think the really successful thing about the animation is that the 3d modelling is actually pretty low detail stuff, but its the lighting, motion blur and choice of shots that make it look so 'realistic'. Clever stuff.

Can I quote you in a reference...? Thank you!

Remembered this morning about a target I set myself. 2 years ago I decided that I wanted to get a massive scale animation done before a certain birthday, which is next month. only just realised that i've done it without even thinking about it

looks great! Maybe a bit heavy on the chromatic aberration effect/filter though

                  Codec?

Weird, this H.264 codec download looks like porn, they keep sending you from page to another, trying to have you download and install weird packages, and talking about "tryouts"...? Do you have to pay to watch content compressed with this?

If this is a legit codec, shouldn't it be VERY straightforward to install, at least for playback porposes?
I mean, they want people to look at stuff compressed wit this codec, do they?

                  nice looking screen shots, anyways.

                  regards

                  gio

It is and I thought it was? you're the first person to associate it with porn, even though nearly everyone has had to grab it... Where are you trying to download it from?

VLC media player includes it, which is what most have been installing - it's a free, stripped down media player. (probably the best solution because it's all in one)

                    edit: try this http://www.free-codecs.com/x264_Vide...c_download.htm

Well, I went to microsoft site, using Win Media Player, but there is no H.264 codec download. Then I went to Apple, since QT would not play it either, and even there, a lot of yap yap, but no clear, direct codec download that I could find.
                      I already have QT 7.4...is H.264 a feature of 7.5 only?

Then I begun googoling the web, and there I have been bouncing off site to site, with pop up, promises for "free" donwload....you know what I mean.

If I had to develop a codec, and cared about its distribution, I would make sure ALL major players and partners would have the damm thinghy installed, or very easily installable...that is all I am saying.

                      Thank you for your help.

PS: donwloaded the free player, beautiful animation!

                      regards

QT does have it and it's a pretty well used standard for .mov, but my encoding software can only do .avi's (could, as of last week they released an update) which I didnt realise at the time but it is no way standard at all...
Will definatly be using QT for the next one.

VLC is slowly taking over as a media player of choice - it's not so well known yet but it does have it.

Truly, an excellent piece of work especially because you did it yourself in the most part.

With regard to the size and complexity of the model, how did you keep it manageable - you mentioned the extensive use of proxies but how did you then manage to get it to render ? All those trees (are they Onyx tree?) and individual buildings, boats, texture maps, reflections etc... I would have got an Out of Memory error for sure.

Did you have access to an in house render farm ?

Were any of your textures unwrapped ?

                          Thanks

We did - lots. It was an absolute nightmare and I spent far too long stripping down scenes based on camera path trying to optimise them as much as possible after the cameras were confirmed - if it moves more than a couple of metres from most of those paths it would start to look very barren...

Yeah - a small-modest dual quad core farm. It's not massive but it does the job.

No unwrapping - everything is just quick box/planer mapping. Didnt have time to really get involved with the textures.
