Really stunning as usual, Brett! Love the additions. My only thought is I'd like to see some more rust/corrosion around the circular bolts on the sides. Looks fantastic in the detail shots, the subtle variation is really nice, but in the first image it looks a bit too uniform. Still, your materials are far beyond anything I've ever been able to achieve. Really hope we're able to nab the RT engine soon!

          Thanks Shaun and Preisler

Preisler: Thanks man - no real plans for a tutorial though. I don't think my method is all that consistent or efficient yet. It really comes down to tweak, tweak, tweak. RT is instrumental for me. Judging by other's work and views it can be just a way of speeding things up, but for me it feels essential for finding the right qualities in the materials. Maybe it is just experience, but I am not convinced.

Shaun: I agree with your comments. I actually struggled with that one quite a bit and actually ended up adding more detail in post. Maybe I will have a look at it again maybe with fresher eyes and do another pass in 3DCoat. Or maybe I'll just show the other two - they work better IMO anyway.

          Thanks for the input.

Thanks Jérôme One or two were done with the last build of SolidRocks as well - saved me some time switching to IM/LC and using your quality settings. I have no idea how to set up IM properly as I always use Universal approach so SR was helpful for sure.

                nice to know
LC/IM + DE is a good compromise instead of universal...
but if universal is your way, just keep it !
                you materials results are amazing....
i'll try the softs you've used to achieve these awasome materials/mappings, just to have an idea.... have you planned to sell a realistic matlib one day ?

Was about to say: fantastic texturing work indeed, but i ain't too sure that some of those dirty metals would be just that much shiny...
I have to say the oxidised copper and the sponge stand out as the best ones by far, with the gold and iron-based metals being a bit less convincing to my eye.
Still some crazy good stuff overall!

Thanks Lele. I think you are right about the shininess. That is probably what was bugging me about the second corkscrew, especially in the overall view.

The sponge is probably the most real one to me as well. It looks simple but it was surprisingly hard to make. I probably spent a day or more just working out that material. Too bad the job went away!

Thanks, I will give the +DE option a try too. I will likely stick with universal for the most part - I was trying to get around some noisy highlights which I think are due to using VrayIES as area lights, so LC/IM didn't help that much anyway.

I doubt I'll ever try and flog materials - but I appreciate the implied compliment I use a lot of royalty-free textures as well, so those I can't really re-distribute anyway.

                        Lovely images, super detailed.

I've read some weird stuff about the 3D Coat developers...about them discriminating against certain artists. An e-mail to one of their potential customers...

"I saw your gallery and it is my pesonal opinion that it has obscene materials. Frankly speaking I do not judge you but I am sad. Really we do not want 3DC to be used in the production of such materials. God saved me from my corruption and I know that He may save you as well if you wants.

May God bless and help you,"

He could stuff his software if that's the kind of thing he was sending out to people. I hope it's not true, it just seems like something from the dark ages!

Well... all religion is something from the Dark Ages if you look at it objectively

Anyway, there is some oddness about usage etc but it's not actually enforceable and not of any major interest to me. I agree with you in principle but I just use the software and ignore the politics. YMMV

Thanks for the comment as well.

LOL...that almost made me spill out my coffee.

What makes me sad is looking at the CGtalk thread, CGtalk in general, and its moderators. The only place I can surf there without getting depressed is the maxscript forum.

                            back on topic...those images rock.
especially the speculars are flawless, which is hard to achieve.

Beyond looking at the galleries occasionally I don't spend much time on there at all. When I started out with CG a couple of years ago I used mental ray and Jeff Patton's thread was another good one and a huge help, but not sure how active that is anymore.

Thanks for the compliments. I pretty much only use area lights and fresnel reflections and the highlights are generally better for it.

Wow, some great images there Brett. I'm glad you're not shy about posting large images so we can see how good those materials really are...

                                Love them.
