does anybody has the max file?
it would be nice, if I could get it, too!
I have to render a scene with a lake in front of a house...
it would help me if I could have a look to the max scene.

hi vlado,
i am working on a scene that needs realistic water in the same way you did this one.
i got it to work but the nice crispy reflections were gone. it rather looked like gel. could i have a max file where it has the same setup as your avi or a explenation on how to get it to work properly.
my background pic can be seen right trough the sea wich has rather weird effect.

Fog is absorption (makes darker with distance), while translucency is sub surface scattering. SSS doesnt' necessarily make things seen through it darker, but does make them more diffuse with distance. You often see both effecs combined, but they are not the same.
If you only used fog the objects below the surface would still look sharp and be visible until you reached black. Like an object in a clear colored liquid. Using translucency lets you create the more murky, particle filled, harbor water/hudson river look.Torgeir Holm | www.netronfilm.com

but i feel like you are talking about something like fog with glossy refraction. Or am i understanding wrong.
fog with glossy refraction, is nto enough?
what is the actual effect that is coming from translucency?

Two differences:- Fog alone always makes the volume darker, but translucency can make the volume brighter in areas because the light is scattered inside the volume.
Think of it like this: fog absorbs light while translucency spreads it around. And you can use the two together as well. - Glossy refraction occurs at the surface (for instance sand blown glass), while translucency happens inside the volume (like in wax, or orange juice). But you are right, they might look very similar sometimes.

i dont understand one thing,
i was never able to get the water as bright as in this videos.
it is always very dark, almost black, even after playing with the translucency depth. i also considered the "dont-use-255-white" bug.
when i use exposure, the objects turn very bright, and the water looks washed out.
if anyone can supply me with a scene file i would be very greatful.Marc Lorenz
