Re: Michas Gallery (update 19sept 2007)

The images are quite "old" and based on a VfR version without physical sky and cam - only standard directional light and HDRI environment.

          Hello Micha,
First of all, your work is just great
Im having a hard time trying to achive those nice highlights reflections you have in picture "46" (the studio setup bike)
Any tips on how to get them? If i set up my lights with a high multiplier to get a strong highlight, obviously my scene fades to white :P
Also, i dont know wheather im using the right lightning setup. HDRI studio setup for GI and Background, and have tried spot, rectangular, and directional lights, but nothing seams to work.
My materials have a reflection layer 0.65 / 0.65, subs 12, phong, Fresnel IOR 1.55.
Any tips would be much apreciated.

          Best regards

          Francisco

            Hi Francisco,

I use rectangular lights with decay for studio setups allways. Glossiness 0.65 is quite rough material, if you see noise, than use higher reflection subdivs like 60.

If you like strong highlights and "scene fades to white", than disable "no decay" could be the solution, because it's the physical correct way - a bright light source, but the decay makes, that the light cause no bright lighting. Extrem example: starts at night - bright visible, but no lighting effect.

Thanks, ill try that, but rectangular lights double or triple my render times.

I use "store with irradiance map" for rect lights allways. If you set subdivs 16, than you should get good results most (the shadow subdivs influence the result of the IM too, not only in standard default raytraced mode)

                      Hi Micha,

You are really making some of us look bad with your fantastic renders, keep up the good work!

I have a question about images 34-36. I'm trying to render a yacht into bitmap but am having a little trouble. I'm trying some still shots at the moment with the boat sitting in the water but ultimatly I'm trying to render the boat into an image with it moving.

I have been using the background command and then the picture frame some command to line the image through but I'm having trouble getting the lighting right. The yacht is either too bright but the background is perfect or the the background is dark and the yacht is perfect. What technic did you use for the car. Do you think it's easier to have fake water and real background image?

                      Cheers

The car is placed on a soft studio ground and "camera" mapped photo background to the studio ground. I used the camera mapping tool from David (you should find it at my render tool thread).
My last info from Vlado to this topic was august 2007:
"Camera projection mapping already exists in the SDK." So, I hope, it can be direct implemented to VfR in the future, because Davids tool works for quite high res meshes only.

For the boat I wouldn't go this way. Better you use the sky or a HDRI (flat desert HDRI works good) and the infinite ground plane with a dark blueish/greenish plastic material (IOR 1.33) and a wave bump.

Here an example from my latest yacht project. Here the water is a textured emitter with reflections.

Image (35) is the heavy version - textured ground profile (random deformed surface) and refractive material for the water at a second surface above. I think, good for best results, but slow.

                          Hi Micha,

Thanks for your reply. I don't have too much of a problem adding fake water to the scene but I ultimately want to add the yacht in the photo shown in the second image.

I use genetica to create alot of my materials. Would a larger image of the water reduce the "repeat" behind the yatch?

Is this something that I can do mostly in vfr and touch up in photoshop or is it more a case of rendering the angle and merging them in photoshop?

                          Cheers,

Repeating texture - best you play with the procedural noise. For an infinite groundplane you must use the "planar world xyz" type. I used a mix of a bump texture and a noise. Noise for large scale waves and texture for the finer wave structure.

I would try to add the second yacht per photoshop, also the water foam.

An interesting model of waves I found here last

                            http://www.sharecg.com/v/25282/3d-model/Wakes

but I found no way to add it so, that it is good looking. Maybe you have an idea.

Thanks for your help Micha. I will post the results when I'm done.

In the end I had to photoshop the yacht into the water. I'll post the pics once the client is happy for me to.

                                Hi micha, I've one question....

I've seen from your gallery this image, how can you create this???
Where i can find a tutorial about "camera mapping"??
                                Thanks.
