A render I did of a model I made when I first saw the Zune HD teaser images
Not happy with the metal yet, I really can't nail the brushed metal look, even with downloaded materials that look fine on other peoples models :P
Hi Jebimasta,
As long as you don't have a background/Environment for the metal to reflect, you won't get any satisfying result.
Now you have only black color surrounding the object.
Check those "studio setup" tutorials, they're for VfMax but the principal is the same: Tutorial 1 / Tutorial 2
I had tried it with enviromental HDRI's but the brushed metal seemed a bit grainy rather than linear, if you know what I mean.
I'm Trying the studio set up now, I really wasnt sure how to go about lighting a studio enviroment, so thanks for the links.
The graininess or noise that you see can be smoothed by increasing the subdivs. If you want a specific brushed metal, you will need a bump map for that.
The table is a replica of a table I saw at Dwell. The glass and water, I follow Ande's tutorial (thanks!). I know the cylindrical bit is very faceted, but this was done before I knew how to make it smooth.
That graininess is what I'm finding it hard to avoid, if the bump map is the right size i just get this noise rather than brushed look. both studio renders use the same bump map but the latter has downloaded metal material settings ("steel brushed light" if I remember correctly, using the brushed bump map in the zip of materials posted on this forum).
So I either have a good brushed look, or a good metallic look. cant seem to combine them :P
