  • Apt. Interior...Critiques and Help Needed?

This is a recent design of mine that I have just kinda done for fun, but I am having an issue with IES lighting and I dont know why? You can see in the original image (image 2) that my spotlights dont look fully lit, but when I increased the intensity to over 300, it just burnt out the area by the clock and I still wasnt getting a good IES scallop. Is it because it is right near a white, semi-reflective surface? I am using a physical camera and I do have the IES map inserted in the transparency spot so I am doing it the right way according to any tutorials. Also, I had one mapped by my painting (Image 3) on the right hand side and the intensity was jacked way up to like 600 and it just let off too much light and it didnt give me any IES scallops when it was a high intensity and when I lowered the intensity to like 250, I would get barely any light at all. Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong? Also, any other comments or critiques are much appreciated.

Re: Apt. Interior...Critiques and Help Needed?

i will be honest with you, whenever i use the physical camera in the interior i just really have difficulty in controlling my exposure. i end up doing all kind of stuff with many experiments like this and sometimes even blaming myself and asking what am i doing, why i cant produce the way this guys produce interior.

take a look on the workflow of jeff santos. whatever he does, he just stick on one vispot (mado's visopt) then he just play around it remembering his settings with light, etc. Of course he is very use too on what he has done on his experience and even i bet while he sleep he still remember his settings.

some of us wants to experiment, we want to know whats going on. and then end up with a lot of frustration. but lo after all this frustrations we managed to learn the bits and pieces of this soft. and wow ui did not even realize that there are so many workarounds. even me i still have alot of frustrations specially when i did some before and applying to the next scene wont work.

in my experience, i have learned to not use the physical camera in my interior scene(night time) or enclose space where you dont see the sun. of course damien will say that using the camera will give you more relaistic lighting. Im not advocating it, but try to turn off your camera off, and begin putting lower multiplier with your lights, you will see the ease of doing interior scenes.

try to look at the thread of "SImple render" i am doing a lot of scenes, with camera off, and i must tell you how happy i am with the result. My settings now are more consistent and i dont have to fire way way up my lights (rectangular, point and emissive) so that their effect will appear. nor i dont have to tweak the exposure of my physical camera because its not existing, not only that, i can just simply put my hdri as light source by just having my multiplier@1.

see for your self. im yuo dont like it, just disregard it.

Thank you Nomer, u are always reliable for getting feedback and help and you always have great suggestions and critiques. But I tried this without a physical camera and I came up with this. I dont understand what I am doing wrong because I have worked without the physical camera before and had success but it looked like this when only using a multiplier of 1 for all lights and emissive materials, so I tried turning GI off and even getting rid of all of my lights and it still turned out over exposed like this (in fact this image is from that scene without lihgts). Am I misssing something?

i dont kno if this might help but it seems as if u still have lights in that scene (omni)@ times whenever i tried turning off my omnies they would still appear in the render. and also @ time i use a multiplier of 1 for exterior scenes. so i dont kno if thats whats happening to you. try to reduce the value of the lights to a small decimal value u can also try changing the colour to exponential instead of lineer multiply if thats what you hav it on. hope this helps cause i am doing allot of assuming here. Good luck. ;D

          Hi,

Besides the render issues, your background image's horizon should be at your eye's height.

i think you need to put an image on your IES so it makes the illusion of deflected light
as i did with this image..
of course that is if you like that effect, dont remember the exact multiplier
but i think it was 7000 because i used physical camera but i also think that
not using any GI whenk making night renders is a good advice, depending on the
effect you want to accomplish. if you dont have the maps i can send them right away!
            good luck!

Nektares, I had already copied the IES filters that were on the IES post somewhere around here if they are what you mean. Then I placed them in the transparancy map slot like they say to do. But if you have other maps, please send them because I do love that effect. But am I wrong? Do you do it differently? I will try completely disabling the GI too and see what that does. Thank you though and im anxiously awaiting those maps

Re: Apt. Interior...Critiques and Help Needed?

Guys, from what I noticed in other posts, those scallops appear on the walls, and that, if the spot light is not too far from that wall.
Try to put a plane near the spotlight( just to see if I'm right). I'm just guessing here, hope this will help
