I am currently reading a box called, Art/Work, and it is worth the read. The book is for artist and freelancers, which I think we all are. The authors mentions that the average artist only makes $10,000 a year, and most have day jobs. They recommend getting a day job for insurance and a way to rub shoulders with people. The day job should be in a field like yours, but not anything that would in conflict with your art. Anyway, I don't think our industry is far off as the artists industry.

That's probably a good idea, but in the past when I've done that I've been too tired to actually do my 3d stuff. It's demotivating. The best I was able to do was to live without insurance and almost nothing and spend 8hrs a day just doing 3d. I just couldn't handle a part time job, 3d, and life. I chose being broke over a part-time job, and I'm glad I did, but I wouldn't suggest it for people with wives or children though .
