Normal maps simulate bumpiness through approximating surface normals in a 3 colour map. They are an evolution of bump maps and are used primarily in games where poly budgets are important - the normal maps are usually derived from high poly models and then applied to a lower poly version thus retaining a high level of detail in the asset, without the poly count.Immersive media - design and production
