  • Armchair Oscar

I've been updating our website and thought I'd post some of the work here.

This is one of a series of images I've done for Esquire magazine for their 'Alternative Oscars' piece they run annually.

Modelling was mostly done in Zbrush, the Oscar figure and the chair were modelled separately then dynameshed into one object. It's lit with a couple of v-ray lights with a softbox texture on them nothing hugely fancy. I'm not 100% happy with the scuffing and scratches on the gold as it's all bit too strong but the deadline was pretty tight for this and we've been too busy for me to tackle a re-do for the portfolio.

Anyway, let me know what you think.

    Cheers!

Clean and simple. I like it, I like the highlights with the pink bits in them

Can you post the wireframe? I would love to see how the wire turned out. A nice wireframed model is almost an art, in its self.

Hi Bobby, the objects were dynameshed in zbrush (basically, fused together) at quite a high resolution to retain the detail so I'm afraid the wireframe will be pug-fugly in this case!

If I get a chance I'll fish out some screen grabs of the model for you.

Okay, I understand. I saw a helmet, that was posted by someone else, and the mesh was awesome. Someday, I would like to learn to model things other than architecture. I did some on-line training, but I never put it to practice.

A lot of the sculptors I know generally make the model in whatever fugly manner they want, and then end up making a clean flowing, idealized mesh using the various retopology options out there. You can then get the programs to calculate the difference between the two meshes and feed you a displacement map so you can get all your detail back at render time. Makes life much easier if you ever want to animate something too.

I second this! This was the first test I tried with it with no guide curves or anything:

It's already an absolutely godsend for a project we're currently working on. The mesh isn't quite good enough for animation but it's decent enough to UV and then pull displacement like Jon said. Really impressed with it!

I got to watch a friend using the new zremesher and this is so amazing. I wonder how far pixologic can push this technology. Maybe someday it can handle the mess that is imported cad models
                          Cheers,

I tried the remesher on some horrible mesh from archicad and it doesn't like the mesh at all!

There are some tricks you can do to help it along but if the base geometry is nasty it will still struggle to give you a decent result.

I was thinking at the weekend how Zbrush is quite unique (for me at least) in that they introduce new features that are immediately indispensable.

Oh and for Bobby, here are some screenshots of the Zbrush model before and after dynameshing. Not sure how interesting they are though!
