Depends on the quality of hdr, both on size resolution and on luminosity or color range. Sometimes the luminosity of lights that depend from the sun, that in some hdr image are clamped, due to over exposed source photo. Also check the subdivision of hdr, normally I set it to 64-128 to have good "shadows".
Another tips, check the colorspace of the hdr bitmap, srgb or correct the gamma to have hard shadows, but you have to pay attention to final color mapping.

I'm not sure that it's a good idea to use SSS for such stuff like leaves - use Two-sided material. Two-sided material is also suitable for cloth like curtains.

                              Re: one try

i tought the sss was a good idea because in nature organic material have a behavior like sss mat, anyway the shot was done with brute force 60 subd with AA 4 min 16 max.
But i read in a site that the max that you can obtain to vray is bf subdivision on default and AA 1-100 , i also read in a post of bbb3 that he used bf with 60 subdivision.
In substance....i have a great confusion!
