since i did this on my spare time, and i was in no hurry, i rendered the IR in the final resolution: 1024x768, and the settings are pretty high (in my opinion).
the IR map calculation took a few hours (have no idea how long exactly, when i woke up it was done). the render itself wasn't too bad, perhaps 1 hour (but i really don't remember for sure, so don't count on it). if you have any idea about how to reduce rendertimes and still have a reasonable image, i'de love to hear, that's the reason i posted this image to begin with.
p.s. - perhaps your scene rendered diffrently because you calulated the IR map with all the glass elements. try hiding them (all the objects named "glass XX" and calculate the map, and then showing them and render with the same map.
