    reza:

since i did this on my spare time, and i was in no hurry, i rendered the IR in the final resolution: 1024x768, and the settings are pretty high (in my opinion).
the IR map calculation took a few hours (have no idea how long exactly, when i woke up it was done). the render itself wasn't too bad, perhaps 1 hour (but i really don't remember for sure, so don't count on it). if you have any idea about how to reduce rendertimes and still have a reasonable image, i'de love to hear, that's the reason i posted this image to begin with.

p.s. - perhaps your scene rendered diffrently because you calulated the IR map with all the glass elements. try hiding them (all the objects named "glass XX" and calculate the map, and then showing them and render with the same map.

As i mention before...the rendering on the file was too long..so i change it..now it takes 14min to render 512*389...but it has not gone thru any photoshop editing. Not as good as your setting though...

reza: when you say "render time" do you include the IR map calculation?
anyway, i'de love to hear about the changes you've done. after all - i posted the scene and the post for people to share opinions and techniques and for evryone to learn, mainly me
about the settings: as you noticed, the shades element in the window (mainly the closed one) has many ugly splotches if the settings drop, like in your case. that's the main reason why my settings are so high.
i don't know what machine you're using, but i believe there is a difference between ours, and considering the machine's specifications, the difference in settings and resolution, it's a reasonable time difference.
        but please share your thoughts...

ok..the machine im using is a dual xeon 3.06 with 1mb cache...what i mean by render time is the total time it takes including IR map calculation. Currently the machine is rendering your model with your settings..ill post the image as well as the settings...thank you for sharing your model..by the way..i never hide any of my objects due to calculating ir maps.
the reason i always freak out when rendering times are high is because i do a new project ever 2 days or so...so modeling and rendering is 2 days max..
Rendering time for 1024*768 is 37 minutes

reza: great job on my scene! first - i would love it if my room indeed looked like that ! a few questions:

i noticed the depth of the secondary bounce is 1, how did you get all the light in? is it just the increase in the skylight mult. ?

are you using color mapping? if so, how did you keep the good colors from washing out and desaturating?

did you turn the skylight portal into a vray light? because in the begining it used to be vray light, and indeed the light and soft shadows were better, but like in your scene - the bars on the window frame were too bright in specific spots, as shown:

how did you manage to lower the HSph and interp. subdv. so much and still get a much-less splotchy walls and corners?

did you render the IR in the same resolution (1024x76?

and last: did you change the QMC settings?

thanks for all your replies and efforts, i appreciate it

                1. your skylight was turn into vray light...multiplier set to 10...
                2. multiplier for direct light set to 9 with vray shadow.
                3. difuse sub division for direct light set to 2000 and for the vray 1750.
                4. bright multiplier set to 1 while dark set to 1.999
                5 color mapping HSV exponential
                6. use catmul-rom

i always have my glass objects on while calculating ir map..the more light there is the more to bounce...and with the multiplier set at a high value..even a little bounce will brightened an area.
and yes...everything is re rendered...i never save my ir to be used again..any changes to the scene even material will have an effect on the lighting.

reza, i'm definetly going to check your settings tonight, looking forward to it.
the diffuse subdivision of a light is new to me - i didn't know about it. just found it in the system roll-out. can you explain exactly what's its effect?
                  thanx

The diffuse subdivision only effects the light when you use photon mapping, if I'm not mistaken.

im not sure if everone agrees to it, but using both irradiance and photon produce best result..ill mail you my version of the file..just mail me so i can reply...tomorow..im at home now. by the way...i forgot to mention...materials play an important role 2 for speed rendering...the simpler the material the better..ill post my material settings tomorrow.

reza, i tried your settings (obviously i couldn't wait - so my studies stepped aside). it took my machine exactly 1 hour, which is a great time imrovement, but the result was extremely splotchy:

any ideas what i'm missing here?
the AA is much better though, thanx.

pengo: just playing with "curves" in PhotoShop, to lighten things up a little. it's better than just brightness & contrast in my opinion
