We should have people sign a disclaimer that they understand that these are not photos, they are renderings. I guess it is managing expectations.

thats another huuuuuge thing, some people google renderings from online and see some really realistic stuff but don't realise some of them took months or even years to complete by the artist and expect you to do the same in a week or two and also a tonne of post work goes into some of those scenes

In my offers I always add a sentance describing the level of visualisation I am offering, usually refering to a specific project on my website. Some are conceptual, others more realistic, then atleast they cant refer to a highend image when paying for a conceptual one.

I turn down work, for the most part, that isn't photorealistic. I figure that they can get what they want for much less than using me. I'm nothing special, but anyone with SU and Revit can produce something decent for cheap.

That isnt the point of my post, photorealistic is too broad a term if that is what you contractually specify. Then the client can request bertrand benoit, PG, etc photorealistic, and that isnt what you are offering. Your complaint was that clients should know what photorealistic is. But that is unrealistic to expect when there are big differences within the industry. So a way to protect yourself is what I described in my earlier post.

Well, this took a 180 turn. Late last night the developer decided that he wanted a cleaner look.

No, I do understand your post. I get hired by my portfolio, so there is not confusion on level of detail. If I were to take a wider gamut of work, then things would get confusing, and I would need to be specific.
