  • Abstract Landcape

An abstract landscape that normally in Modo would give me all sorts of problems tying to get rid of the noise demons. The pine needles and sphere would always just get fireflys all over them. Then I would do the dance of reflective rays, light samples, AA, maximum radiance, shading rate, ray threshold... ugh. There went 3 hours of testing and a page of notes.

With Vray I just set it to adaptive- 6 / 1 / 12 / .001 and let it go over night. No tinkering. I could optimize for time but I was going to bed so I just let it go. With VRay I can focus on light and textures instead of problem solving.

To my eyes, the quality of light in VRay is a lot more "atmospheric" or "camera like" instead of having that hard clean look of Modo or Octane. Feels more photoreal in the fern leaves for instance.

I wish volumes worked though. Wanted a volumetric light in the back window and sprites instead of polys for the floaty bits

Halleluja - completely agree. It is really nice and great to setup.

Very interessting image also. Is this for a paid job or a personal thingy?

Just personal. I try to do the "Create Everyday" / "Progess before Perfection" thing on instagram. Everything in house is normal retouching ATM, sadly no CG.

That's a nice little image you have there!

I agree too. It's nice to know you can just fall back to something that will work, but if you want to get involved and bring down times/refine you can too. Yes, you can let preview go over night, but we all know it's not the same thing and brings with it a wealth of limitations.

        +1 Vray.

          Thanks!

Here is another that was nightmare fuel in Modo trying to get clean. I apologize for the floor, this was me just testing reflections to see how VRay delt with it. It's an area light and a plane with the building image set to luminious amount coming through actual windows. One spot coming from camera bottom left. No muss, no fuss, just let it go. There is some noise I could clean up yet, but this was my defaults above. Once again, just testing. Click image for larger version

Cool test and good idea with the area light. I'm not use to being able to texture area lights, or turn meshes into lights with textures- so thanks for the tip!

Have you tried the denoiser set to even the lowest settings to see how it handles that last little bit of noise?

Or are you talking about the caustics like noise on the floor?

I did use the denoiser on this and it is really helpful. I use Neat Image normally and I find the VRay Denoiser much better. The noise is in the chrome in some of the deeper set areas. I fully ignored the floor on this test, lol!

That is interesting. Do you think you'd mind sharing a portion of your scene for me to test out some things in terms of the noise etc?

Sure, I'll post the shattered sphere with a blank floor later when I get a chance to break out all the stuff I can't share.

Here it is stripped down. Have some buggy parts from Slik2 left in there that crash my Modo when I try to delete them.

Thanks- I'll take a look soon and let you know if I find anything worth sharing.

Edit- actually something odd with your file. It had no render outputs, and nothing tagged in the shader tree. There are a few materials in the library, and the geometry is there, but something happened to the masks.

Interesting, this sounds like the bug described here : http://forums.chaosgroup.com/showthr...s-the-next-day

The scene opens fine for me in MODO 10.0v1.
I also only have V-Ray and the Octane Demo plug-in, no other plug-ins.

What MODO version are you using ? Can you try disabling plug-ins and trying to load the scene until the materials show up ?
It would be nice to find the reason for this bug.

                        Greetings,
