I have one at the moment, where I insisted in getting all the info up front before I could give an accurate quote. They delayd and delayd and inisted on a quote so I ended up quoting on what they gave. They said furniture and finishes will come later so I added in the contract that may need an additional quote as it will be charged per hour for custom furn modelling, if the items is not in my asset library. Now the "rest" arrived and it's literally about 50 custom items, that is taking longer to model, than the entire rest of the actual project. Not sure yet how to handle it, as I've also never enforced this part in the past. If I now suddenly insist they pay for these extras, I may loose them as a client. But I also don't want to be working for free and have clients get use to that sort of thing. It's not sustainable in the long run, but if you need to pay your bills in the meantime, what can you do, we don't all have projects booked months in advance.

We get paid for our talent and time. Nowhere would someone work for free, so I would charge. The way I look at it is if I were to be paying an employee to do it, I would be eating the cost, which doesn't make business sense.

This is why recently I stopped quoting on work where I felt there simply wasn't enough information to assess the workload accurately - you end up between a rock and a hard place. Not enough information means you either go in too low, and get caught in regret, quote too high (to cover yourself) and don't win the work.

I'll ask the potential new client for more information and if they cannot provide that, and I genuinely cannot quote, then I politely explain I cannot give a price.

The alternative of course, is to give a price range.

Morne, my advice to you would have been that as soon as you became aware of the extra work, to get on the phone and explain why that'd be extra money. Saying "if" (my least favourite word by the way!) "they do this, or do that" is only fear-based thinking about the future (which hasn't happened, and may not happen).

I get people calling with an idea, but no drawings and they want me to put their vision to paper. I turn these people down right away every time.
