3 hrs is not bad, but I thin that can be improved further....

if you got enough ram (between 1.5 and 2 gb) try uping the "Max tree depth" in the ray cast parameters to 62 or 63....and lower the Face/level coef to 0.6 (lower then 0.6 it won't make a difference - or it might actually slow it down).....but these two setting should give you a bust in speed w/out sacrifice in quality.

you could also lower your HPsudiv for the Imap to 70 or 65....you should get away with that visually but cut down render time.

try making you buckets 128x128...I've read somewhere that that speeds things up a bit as well......can't really tell though myself...

in the future you might wanna use Photns or lightmap...DEFINATLY a lot faster...

And here is the proof that a tool is only... a tool, nice render Frances, your second image and it is looking better than everything that I have done so far.

      Congratulations,
      Miguel.

nice work frances....looks like youre mastering Vray.......so.......your radiosity days are over?

about the lamps. The main problem is the materials, why dont you try making the lamp stainless steel and see how it looks.

            Thanks. Here is the wireframe:

Regarding the finish, it doesn't come in ss.

              Nice Frances,

I remember you being a bit frustrated about not getting the right quality out of Vray. But this image shows you really kept faith. Well done.

The only thing I don't quite like is the shadow of the window blinds. In real life this would never be so sharp.

                Hi Gijs,

Thanks. I will see what happens when I enable area shadows for the direct light. The size has to be small or the shadows are way too diffuse. I'm trying Sphere with diameter 5 and subdiv 5 right now.

                    Hi Frances,

here are some numbers to keep you busy

distance earth from sun is about 149 million kilometers.

diameter of sun is about 1.4 million kilometers.

This means that if you place a direct light about 1000 units away from your object, its diameter should be about 9.4 units.

U V and W parameters of the Vray lights are in system units. When using a sphere shadow, the U value is the radius of the light. In this particular example the U value should be 4.7

The farther you place your direct light, the more realistic (parallel) the shadows will be

Isn't the point of using a direct light is that your shadows will be parallel no matter how near or far you situate the light? So that you don't have to put the light thousands or millions of units away?

hehe, I think he was referring to the "direct light", not "direct light"

Yes, until you turn area shadows on. The light remains the same, but your shadow will be sampled from around the lightcourse. Practically turning on area shadows makes the direct light a spot.

                                Hi Dynedain,

The wood for table, etc., is a VRay mat.
                                Here are the reflection settings:
                                HSV = 0,0,44
                                Glossiness .9
                                Subdivs 5
                                Max Depth 3

                                I used Blinn BRDF.

I can't share the map because it was purchased, but here is a link to a very good texture source put together by Frank Smith:

http://www.fls-tech.com/AR3/Pages/index2.htm (this is a wood page)

Not all of the textures tile, but many do even if they haven't been checked.

I hope this helps you out.
