hussam, gogator: well, I didn't use displacement on material editor. Just a vray material, then vray displacement modifier. there I put the map, with 3d displacement, and finaly the uvw map. The uvw map should be quite little, with dimensions near to the map size. That's it... just regular displacement.

    I'm using 1.09.03r too.

    Gijs: Thnx!
    Guido.

Think we will see a lot of these chairs in future renderings

Ok, I have found that there is quite a difference in the displacement in the latest beta build. Everything is looking good in 1.09.

Has anyone had any luck repeating this displacment in 1.46.04?

Yes I had no problem repeating it.

I did nothing special, just vraydisplacement with this map, and set the tiling to your liking.

(I converted the tiff to a bmp because max wouldn't accept the tiff)

Wouter, I can get it working perfectly with 2d mapping, but when i try to use 3d mapping the results are really poor, can you share your settings for 3d mapping?

                      Ok,

I took the map and converted it to bmp.
I created a torus knot and a box with mapping coordinates.
Made two materials with the same displacement map, but other tiling. It helps to put it in diffuse first to see how it looks like on the model.
Put vray displ mod on each object, with 'use obj mtl' on and 'keep continuity' also on.
                      Rest is default!

Make sure you give the box and torus knot enough segements. Else you should raise the max subdivs from the vraydispl map, but it's better to subdivide the mesh a bit more (according to the manual).

Just tick the checkbox 'create mapping coordinates' in the rollout for the box or torus or whatever max primitive you're creating.

You could also just put a uvw map on the box for example. The box just needs mapping coordinates otherwise max doesn't know how to map the displacement map on the object.

panda, mapping coordinates is just a checkbox which is on by default.

It helps to put it in diffuse first to see how it looks like on the model.
Don't need to, just click the show map in viewport button when you are in map editing mode of your displacement map

In max 5 it's not on by default it seems.

Oh yeah, show map in viewport, hehe
