What an impressive machine! But 2.9GHz is slower than 3.7GHz of the 3970 and isn't that important for Phoenix or since everything else is so much better with the 3990x will that slower clock speed not matter?
I see boost is close at 4.3 vs 4.5GHz so......?
I've got a 3970 on the way and it's a stretch for my budget so no way I could get the 3990 even though I'd like it

Boost is around 4.3 - 4.5 GHz for single core, so I think it will be fine.
And Phoenix can run sim on multiple cores or not? It is Chaos app not Autodesk so I thought it does but maybe I am wrong.AMD TR 7980X, 256GB DDR5, GeForce RTX 4090 24GB, Win 10 Pro

So.. im not sure if ill beat vlado, but i have decided to be the guinea pig. my 3990 should arrive in 2 days. rest of the pc components a day or so after i think! hoping to put the thing together this weekend
not sure ifi should get windows 10 for workstations.. is there any benefit having all cores in a single processor group? vray doesnt care, and most other things are never gonna use more than 64 threads anyway..

i am wondering about the scheduler....are there any performance tests with 2990WX on WIN ENT???
checked the pricing and its not so bad, there is a monthly subscription on WIN ENT.....and hopefully shitloads of unnecessary stuff thats on classical PRO will be missing there
already ordered MB and 3990
choosing the right memory sticks will be the toughest call.
AMD says 3990 supports up to 3200Ghz but i ve seen people using 3600Ghz for 3970...of course the faster the better but u never know until you put the sticks in.

regarding win ENT.. i believe win10 pro for workstations has the same features and is a simple in app upgrade option from win10pro
regarding ram... i also went a bit bonkers choosing ram.. i was set on corsair 3600 4x32gb.. cheap and leaves ram slots free..
in the end i was convinced to get an 8x16gb trident-z set (3200 cl15) cost more and leaves no ram slots free..
to be honest im not sure i made the right decision.. all that ive read since, regarding ram on 3rd gen TR seems to suggest that as long as u can hit a decent clock speed on ram, the timings make a miniscule difference and id have been better with the free ram slots and 300 quid still in my pocket.Last edited by super gnu; 11-02-2020, 02:12 AM.

we got a 3990x about a week ago.
The only thing I want to bring up is that in our work bucket mode is still faster than progressive for final frame rendering, except for a few rare exceptions. It makes me a bit bummed that the vray benchmark is progressive because the results we get are quite different from what the benchmark shows. Meaning benchmark performance results vs when we run our actual scenes.
For example vray benchmark shows 3990x as 2.6 times faster vs 2990wx, but when rendering a production scene in bucket mode its 2 times faster.
another example is in vray benchmark the 2990wx is only a bit faster than the 16 core 3950x (less than 10% faster), but in the same production scene with bucket mode the 2990wx is 40% faster than the 3950x. (wow the 3950x is an amazing value!)
The benchmark seems to be a good measurement for IPR/Progressive rendering but beware if you mainly use bucket mode. Progressive mode benchmark has value no question, but for us it doesn't represent how we use vray everyday.
I think for us we will probably have to move to an in house vrscene that we use to compare relative performance which is a bummer since the tech reviewers are using the vray benchmark.
To be clear i'm not complaining about anything. just wanted to add to the conversations and possibly raise some awareness for potential buyers.--=============--

I will start doing tests very soon. In my opinion the bucket mode is heavily dependent on the right bucket size and of course on the scene itself. Try going for 32 and above. My tests with 2990 show that in some scenes rendering with 24 below tends to slow down quite a lot.Martin

for my testing its more about the scene and less about 2990 vs something else. many of our scenes still render faster or about the same with a bucket size of 16. Though i get why larger buckets would make sense for the 2990 but in our practice this is not the case. I think it must depend on the type of stuff you render and not a stead fast rule.--=============--

I tried that too some time ago and with bucket 20 it was always faster then bigger buckets. Probably because few last buckets render faster.AMD TR 7980X, 256GB DDR5, GeForce RTX 4090 24GB, Win 10 Pro
