Thanks, at one point I did see it go to 3.3 but as mentioned here it could have been on select cores. I'm happy with the way it runs, so whatever. A bit less here a bit more there... that's why you have a farm to do all the juicy rendering anyway.

The 8 core i7 socket 2011-3 extreme 5960x with ddr4 overclocked with ease to 4.0ghz with very large Noctua air coolers is the winner in price to performance ratio at the moment. The dual socket systems are twice the price for about the same performance.

Also water cooling is very scarey when you one day find the water has vanished without any hint as to where it has gone! (happened to me!)

I won't do water cooling and I won't do dual xeons again anytime soon. (unless of course the $ to performance numbers change)

when you talk about water-cooling, do you refer to hand made big water cooling solution or something like the H100?

all the water vanished?! and you never found it? either aliens or an *exceedingly* hot computer (imagines steam whistle sound).

this was before there was sealed all in one solutions for watercooling, so i don't know how reliable those are. but yes all the water was gone and there was no sign of it anywhere. It was overclocked to crazy levels and started to crash a bit when i noticed the lack of water... zero water at all... replaced with a ridiculously big noctua air cooler and found the temps to be just as good anyway as water cooling so probably never go back to water.
